Entry 518 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua, a) [in Mishnah Avot 4:4, Gittin 3:8, Temurah 3:3, and Chagigah (12b)]. He is referred to simply as Rabbi Elazar in the Mishnah and in the Beraitot. [Rashi in Shabbat (19a), Eruvin (38b), Yevamot (72b, 111b), Gittin (31b), and Ketubot (40a). And Tosafot in Bava Batra (116) wrote Rabbi Elazar, and not Rabbi Eliezer who is the son of Horkanos (and see there)]. Although you will find in chapter 2 of Avot a simple Rabbi Elazar, and he is Rabbi Elazar ben Arach, this is a matter that can be learned from its context.

b) [In the Sifrei, Parashat Re'eh, it is stated: "When HaShem your God cuts off..." that he went to learn Torah with Rabbi Yochanan the sandal maker at the hands of Rabbi Yehuda ben Beterah and Rabbi Yehuda ben Shamua (see there). Rashi wrote in Ketubot (10a) that he was a student of Rabbi Akiva, as it is stated in the chapter "The One Who Lost His Property" when the students of Rabbi Akiva died (see there), and the world was desolate until Rabbi Akiva came to our teachers in the South and taught them to Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Yehuda, Rabbi Yosi, Rabbi Shimon, and Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua.

And in Zevachim, chapter 11 (63b, 110b), Rabbi Elazar follows the opinion of Rabbi Akiva, his teacher, as stated. And in Ketubot (there)]. Rabbi Yehuda ben Bava supported him. And he was the teacher of Rabbi in the chapter "The Uncircumcised" [(4:1)] who said that he went to learn Torah from Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua, his colleague, and his students were after him like chickens of the house of Bokia, and they did not allow him to learn from him except for one thing from our Mishnah. [(And in Yoma (79b), Rabbi said: When we were learning Torah from Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai)] and in the chapter "The Omer" [(18a)] Rabbi said: When I went [(to the measures of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai, and some say the measures of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai)] I found Yosef the Babylonian sitting before him [(see Isi ben Akiva).

And in Eruvin (53a), Rabbi said: When we were learning from Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai, six would sit in one amah. Rabbi Yochanan said: The earlier ones were like the entrance of a hall, and the later ones were like the entrance of the sanctuary; the earlier ones were Rabbi Akiva and the later ones were Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai. Others say: The earlier ones were Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai and the later ones were Rabbi Oshaya (see Rabbi Akiva).

In Menachot (22a), Rabbi Elazar preceded the words of Rabbi Shimon, who was a colleague of Rabbi, to Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua, who was the teacher of Rabbi (see what I have written in the rules)]:

g) [In chapter six of Yevamot and in Sotah (39)] and in the chapter of the inhabitants of the city [(27)] there was a priest [(who blessed before the lifting of the hands and did not perform the Kapandria in the synagogue nor step upon the heads of the holy people.

Therefore)] he lived a long life [(in Midrash Rabbah, chapter eleven)]. Rav called him Tuvia the Wise. [In Gittin (26b), Ketubot (40a), and Keritot (13b)] Rashi explains that he was fortunate among the sages, and Rav Tzemaḥ explained that he was wondrous in wisdom. He is the last of the ten martyrs, and he was killed on the eve of Shabbat when he reached the Kiddush, "Blessed is He who created" and a heavenly voice went forth, "Fortunate are you, Elazar my son, in this world your soul was similar to HaShem and your soul departed in HaShem." And I wonder, since he was the teacher of Rabbi and it appears that there was no persecution in the days of Rabbi, although in the chapter "We do not recognize" Rashi explains to go to the good eye and sanctify the month, since there was persecution it does not appear except according to another explanation in Rashi. [When he died, the Torah scroll was hidden (Mishnah, chapter of the heifer that is beheaded)]:

4) [Aba Eliezer ben Dolai during his time. Rabbi Eliezer said in the name of Rabbi Eliezer (Tosefta, Chapter 3 of Terumot and in the chapter of Menachot). Rabbi Elazar says Rabbi Eliezer disqualifies and Rabbi Yehoshua validates. Rabbi Elazar said: We said to Meir that his friend was not called Rabbi (Gittin 12b).

Rabbi Elazar said: When I went to Aradsky, I found Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Yehuda ben Bava (there). I mentioned to him that Meir was proficient in Joshua ben Mamle, and he said yes, and he was a master of halakhot (Tosefta, Nazir Chapter 5). And what is stated in Nazir Chapter 7 (Nazir 56b), Rabbi Eliezer said Rabbi Yehoshua, etc., in the Mishnah, and in the Gemara there, Rabbi Eliezer said: When I went to Aradsky, I found Rabbi Meir; it is a mistake, and it should be Rabbi Elazar (in the commentary of Etz Chaim on the aforementioned Nazir), and he is Rabbi Eliezer ben Shamua.

Rabbi Yosi ben Yehuda in his name, and it requires investigation. Rabbi Yosi ben Kifar in his name, Rabbi Yosi ben Prida, his student. In the name of Rabbi Yosi the Galilean. In the name of Rabbi Yehuda ben Beterra.]
