Entry 517 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Elazar Chisma. A) [In the Mishnah, Chapter 3 of Avot; Terumot, Chapter 3, Mishnah 5; Yoma (19b); Bava Metzia, Chapter 7, Mishnah 5; Negaim, Chapter 7, Mishnah 2, and Chapter 13, Mishnah 3; Mikvaot, Chapter 8, Mishnah 3]:

b) And he is called Chasama, as it is stated in Rabba, in Vayikra, Parashat Acharei (Parashat 23), that they asked him matters of blessings, such as the seven blessings of the wedding, which the sages were not accustomed to. [(And in the Midrash it is seen in Parashat Kishoshana Bein HaChuchim that they asked matters of blessings and to recite the Shema)]. And they said to him, "On the shield, they call you Rabbi," and for this reason, he is called Chasama, from the term "You shall not muzzle the ox" until he went before Rabbi Akiva and learned before Rabbi Akiva. [And see Matnot Kehunah, which explains Chasama in the sense that he was strengthened.

And it also appears in the Midrash that he was called Chasama after he knew how to recite the Shema and descended before the ark.

Moreover, how could they call him Chasama as a derogatory name?] He also has a halacha regarding muzzling in the chapter "The One Who Hires Workers." [The Rambam wrote that it is mentioned only in Chapter 3 of Terumot, and it is also mentioned in Chapter 7 of Negaim and Chapter 13. And in Bava Metzia, Chapter 7, Mishnah 5, in these places, Rabbi Elazar ben Chasama is mentioned. And according to the above that I have mentioned, he was not the son of Chasama, but he was called Chasama as stated above.

This is the language of the aforementioned Midrash: Once Rabbi Elazar came to a certain place and they asked him to recite, etc., and not Rabbi Elazar ben Chasama came to a certain place, and it is clear. And it is also found in the Tosefta, Chapter 3 of Avot.]

3) There was a great man who was a scholar, and he had nothing to eat or wear. Raban Gamliel wanted to place him at the head (of the community) so that he would have sustenance, but he did not agree until he said to him, "I will give you servitude." (Horayot [10a] and in the Sifrei Devarim, paragraph, "And I command your judges") in the last chapter of Rosh Hashanah, who descended before the Ark.

4) [He said to Rabbi Yehoshua, and Rabbi Yehoshua said to him, Pesachim (32a). Rabbi Chanania ben Antigonus in his name. His colleague Rabbi Yochanan ben Gudgeda (see there). And Rabbi Yochanan ben Beroka, and they went to greet Rabbi Yehoshua in Peki'in, Chagigah (3).

And Rabbi Yochanan ben Nuri. Rabbi Yosi ben Mishulam in his time. (See Rabbi Shimon ben Menasya)].
