רב אחא בר יעקב

רב אחא בר יעקב

Entry 293 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rab Acha bar Yaakov had his seat in Papunya [Kiddushin (35a), Bava Kamma (54b) established in Papunya, Niddah (67b)]. Sixty elders were removed from the teachings of Rav Huna, who would delay themselves from relieving themselves outside of him, and he maintained it within himself, and wisdom will sustain its owner [(there). And he would eat during the day when he was preoccupied with sustenance and would pay at night.

Perek HaDar (65a)]. Rava praised Rav Nachman, saying that he is a great man [(Bava Kamma 40a), and in Yoma (46a) Rava said of him, "Who is this that does not care for his flour?" And he was distinguished in wisdom and age (see above, Rabbi Elazar from Garonya) and taught that the Satan and the precious one intended for the sake of Heaven, and the Satan came and kissed him on his knees, Bava Batra (16a), and in Sukkah (38a) he would take and bring the lulav and said, "Giri in my eyes, the Satan." And the fact that the Satan did not trouble him as he troubled Plimo, who was accustomed to say, "Giri in my eyes, the Satan," can be explained that this was only done with the lulav and not every day.

Or it can be said that since he taught in his merit that the Satan intended to kiss me]. He wrote that there were the hides of calves, and it happened that their length was equal to their circumference, and the Rabbis set their eyes upon it, and my soul rested [(Baba Batra 14a)]. And he was learned in miracles, having killed the damaging spirit that had seven heads while he was in the study hall of Abaye [(who was the reincarnation of the one with the concubine, see Abaye at length).

The Maggid of the Agadah wrote in section 132 that the damaging spirit had seven heads because the shell of Esav has seven forces of impurity, and Samal, the minister of Esav, has seven names; he is the angel of death and the evil inclination, and Yaakov needed to bow down seven times against these seven heads. And in the Shema that Yaakov recited, he subdued the seven heads, and thus it is said, "Esav, I have much, my brother," hinting at Rav Acha, therefore he is called bar Yaakov, for this power that Rav Acha fell upon the seven heads of the Tannin came to him from Yaakov.

And this is what Esav wanted to do, and thus it is said, "Let me pass, I pray" (Genesis 32:30), the acronym being Nachash Acha (there). On Shabbat (139a) and to give to a Jewish child, the Tosafot wrote that they have a tradition in their hands that this is the one who challenges Rav Acha bar Yaakov, and so too the Tosafot in Eruvin (40b). The halacha is not like Rav Acha bar Yaakov, Rashi explained that he was not distinguished where, and the Tosafot wrote that they have a tradition in their hands, etc.

Rabbi Acha bar Tachlifah and Rav Acha bar Ika, his nephew. And Rabbi Elazar from Garonya was punished because of him (there). Rabbi Abba bar Zavda, his friend. Abaye (see above).

Rabbi Elai said in the name of Rabbi Acha bar Yaakov in the name of our Rabbi (Rashi explained, our Rabbi) in Berachot (22a). And it seems that is why they counted the remnant of Yosef among the students of Rav.

However, it is difficult because he was a student of Rav Huna as mentioned above, and Rav Huna was a student of Rav. Rav Gidal, his friend. Rav Huna, his teacher (see above). Rabbi Zeira said in Yoma (55a).

He challenged what was said by Rachba in the name of Rabbi Yehuda. He said to Rabbi Chiya from Hormiz that I will expound in the name of Rav Nachman bar Yaakov, Pah"e (Niddah 52a). He said about Rabbi Chama that he handed the world over to fools (there), but the version of the eye of Yaakov said that he said about Rav Chisda, and it is difficult. And the version of the Gemara said that he said about Rav Acha, Rabbi Yochanan said in Perek HaMedir (74a), during the time of Rav Nachman (see above).

Rav Pappa sat before him in Chulin (33a). Rava praised him (see above) and said of him that he did not care for flours (see above). Rav Sheshet, his friend. Rabbi Yaakov bar Acha, his father, Rabbi Yaakov, his brother, Rabbi Yaakov bar Bartiya.
