Entry 990 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rav Huna bar Chinnana [(and in several places, bar Chanina)] during the time of Rav Sheshet [(according to some opinions)] and his son during the time of Rav Pappa. [He also was during the time of Rav Pappa, as it is stated in Pesachim (16a) that he said to his son, "When you come before Rav Pappa, ask him." In Ketubot (61a) it is stated that Rav Huna examined for us, Rav Huna bar Chinnana, she says to nurse and he says not to nurse, etc., and I explained to him that it is a burden upon him and does not go down. Rav Huna said, "What is the verse?" "And she is a wife of a man," etc.

And Rabbi Elazar said from here, "For she was the mother of all living; to life it was given." This is very puzzling, for Rav Huna died before Rav Yehuda (as noted), and Rava was born on the day Rav Yehuda died, and Rava said to his student Rav Pappa to translate for R'H B"H, and how could R'H B"H have examined him like Rav for his student?

Moreover, the language is puzzling, after all, R'H B"H examined him, she says, etc., and I explained to him that it is a burden upon him; how could the language fall to say, "Rav Huna said, 'What is the verse?'" It should have been stated briefly, "And I explained to him that it is a burden upon him," as it is written, "And she is a wife of a man." I searched with candles and they did not illuminate for me.

However, I toiled and found in the Yalkut on Bereshit, hint 33, it is stated, "R' Pappa examined for us, Rava, she says to nurse, etc., and I explained to him that it is a burden upon him and does not go down with him; what is the verse? 'And she is a wife of a man,' etc." This greatly benefits me, and the ancients did not pay attention, and in the Shas HaKodesh they did not correct it.

However, it requires investigation regarding what Rabbi Elazar concluded there, saying from here, "For she was the mother of..." but Rabbi Elazar preceded Rava. And the version of the Rosh is also not correct, "R'H B"H examined for us." And Abaye, and Rav Safra, and Rav Acha bar Rav Huna in Bava Batra (67b), and Rav Huna bar Rav Nachman argue with Rava in Avodah Zarah (57b), as noted. He said to his son, "When you come before Rabbi Zerika, ask him about Pesachim (3a)." Rav Chiya bar Rav said in Berachot (30a).

And Rav Chiya bar Abin said to him, "You spoke well," in Berachot (there). He sat before Rav Chisda in Makkot (10b). He said to Rav Yosef in Eruvin (14b). Rav Nachman said in Ketubot (100a), in Kiddushin (M.B. 1a), in Avodah Zarah (24a), in Temurah (30b), in Bava Batra (115a).

He intended to go to the study hall in the first chapter; he said to Rava, "Translate for me." Rava said to R' Pappa, "Go, translate for him." He went out, and the rooster of Rava crowed, and he prohibited the rooster of Rav Huna bar Chinnana and permitted, etc. Rabbi Yirmiya said, "From the depths of my heart," he said to Rav Pappi, "When R'H B"H permits, etc." in Avodah Zarah (40a). He challenged Rava from Niddah (46a), and Rava said, "Whoever does not know..." in Eruvin (67b).

The Rosh Galuta said to him to establish a place for him to sit on Shabbat in his garden, and Rava sent to him, and R' Pappa and R'H bar Rav Yehoshua, and Ravina challenged Rava, and Rabbi called upon them, "They are wise to do evil and to do good; they did not know there" (26a), and they translated it (there, 72b), and Bar Tachlifa bar Imi sat before Rabbi Elazar.
