רב ביבי

Entry 687 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Bibi [when Rabbi Dimi came, he said] it was the Sabbath of Rabbi Bibi (the day had arrived for him to teach the students [Rashi]) and Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Asi happened upon him, a great principle [(according to the reading before us, Rabbi Bibi is mentioned without the title Bar Avin)]. In the Jerusalem Talmud, Rabbi Menachma in the name of Rabbi Bibi. [He asked from Rabbi Nachman in Bava Metzia (23b)].

Rabbi Nachman said, Rabbi Bibi who drank two cups of beer in the presence of his daughter, [Shabbat (2), Pesachim (43), Makkot (9b)]. Rabbi Bibi taught before Rabbi Nachman [Chagigah (22b), Nedarim (35b), Bava Batra (36b), Niddah (45a), Yevamot (100b)]. Rabbi Yosef said, Rabbi taught, etc. Rabbi Bibi said to him, do not listen to what he teaches in the name of Rabbi, I said, I will say it in the name of Rabbi Ada bar Ahavah, Eruvin (75b)].

At the end of Kiddushin [(1:1)] Rabbi Bibi ate with Rabbi Yosef in the upper room, and Rabbi Yosef went down with his wife and said, Rabbi Yosef said to remove the ladder so that Rabbi Bibi should not be secluded with his wife even though her husband is in the city, even in the house. For Rabbi Bibi is different, for she is his bridesmaid and is accustomed to him. And the Sefer Mitzvot Gadol [(Negative Commandment 126)] brought this regarding those who are accustomed in the house that one must guard.

And it is strange that the authors did not bring this law even in the house but only in the city [(see Shulchan Aruch Even HaEzer 22)]. Rabbi Pappa sat behind Rabbi Bibi before Rabbi Hamnuna [and he sat and said, what is the reason that Rabbi Shimon holds that, etc. Rabbi Pappa said to them, this is what, etc. according to Rabbi Pappa, even, etc., Niddah (27a)]. Rabbi Bibi was the guest of Rabbi Ada bar Ahavah, who was a convert; he was a Minzi and Rabbi Bibi was involved in matters of public leadership and the convert's mother was from Israel.

They came before Rabbi Yosef and Rabbi Bibi said that he is a great man to deliberate on matters of Heaven and the convert on matters of the city. Rashi, may his memory be blessed, explained that the collection of charity and its distribution and the order of exemption are matters of Heaven, and matters of the city are other public needs for the wall, the doors, and the springs. [In the Chain of Tradition (33b), it is written that Rabbi Bibi, the convert, and his mother was a Jew, was arguing with Rabbi Ada bar Ahavah regarding matters of public leadership, they came before Rabbi Yosef, and Rabbi Ada ruled that he is a great man to deliberate, etc., and the convert on matters, etc.

See how this report has become confused, and it is a Gemara in Kiddushin (76b). The guest of Rabbi Ada bar Ahavah had those eggs from Yom Tov for Shabbat, he came before, etc., Beitzah (1a)].
