רב ביבי בר אבין

רב ביבי בר אבין

Entry 686 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Bibi bar Abin said in the name of Rabbi Yochanan, in the name of Rabbi Zeira: Rabbi Bibi merited this teaching, and I was present. I sat before Rabbi Yochanan when he said this teaching, and he preceded me and said it. And in Niddah (25b), the version of Rabbi Abaye is cited, and the lineage states the true text is Rabbi Abin and not Rabbi Abaye, and the law is with him, for Abaye was the father of Rabbi Bibi and was a long time after Rabbi Yochanan, and this is clear.

And in Shas, it was not corrected. And Rabbi Bibi bar Abin said in the name of Rabbi Amram in the name of Rabbi Yitzchak, who said in the name of Rabbi Yochanan, and they were all in the time of Rabbi Yochanan [(as it is said, and perhaps it should be Rabbi Idi bar Abin, for Rabbi Amram was in the time of Abaye and Rava)] and this Rabbi Bibi was in Eretz Yisrael when Rabbi Zeira ascended before him.

Rabbi Bibi said to Rabbi (and there is a question) and to Rabbi Asi in the West, and Rabbi Zeira said: "By the life of the Master, I, and Rabbi Asi, and Rabbi Chiya bar Abba." [(And in the tractate Megillah, verse 8, Rabbi Bibi bar Abina)]:
