Entry 527 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Elazar ben Padata. A) He is the anonymous Rabbi Elazar of the Amoraim. Rashi in the first chapter of Shabbat [(19a)] and in Yevamot [(82b, and 111b), Niddah (8a), Gittin (31b)]:

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.527:1

b) And it appears that he was a priest, for at the end of Makkot [(28a)] when the Angel of Death appeared to him, he said to him, "Am I not eating terumah?" and the time passed and he did not die at that moment. And one cannot say that this R' Elazar is R' Elazar ben Shamua the priest, for all the actions regarding the Angel of Death mentioned there were by Amoraim [(Rava, Rav Nachman, Rav Chisda, R' Chiya, Rav Ashi)].

And the Sefer HaMitzvot Gadol (s'ma'g) brings in the name of the Yerushalmi [(Perek 1, Halacha 1)] that R' Elazar, when he was old, went outside at the time of the priestly blessing, and so wrote R' David Abudraham.

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.527:2

g) [In Eruvin (54b)] In his love, he was always engaged in Torah, in the lower marketplace of Tzipori, and his cloak was laid in the upper marketplace [(As Rabbi Yitzchak ben Elazar said, once a certain man came to take it and found)] a snake coiled around it. They sent from there, he is Rabbi Elazar [(as noted in the end of Sanhedrin (17b), and see Rabbi Yossi bar Chanina)] and he was from Babylonia, as it is stated at the end of Ketubot [(112a)].

Rabbi Elazar ascended to Eretz Yisrael and said, "Pleti from one" [(from the severe curses in the Scriptures)] because they supported him, he said, "Pleti from two," they asked him about the secret of the intercalation, he said, "Pleti from three." [And it seems that in his youth he ascended and married a woman in Tiberias (see above)]. And in Shekalim, this is Elazar in Babylon and in Midbar Rabba, this is the story.

And he was called "the master of the land of Israel" because he was proficient in blood [that woman brought before him blood; Rabbi Ami was sitting beside Rabbi Elazar. "This is blood of desire and it is pure." Rabbi Ami approached that woman and said to her, "My husband was on the way and I desired him," Rabbi Ami recited upon her, "The secret of HaShem is for those who fear Him" (Psalms 25:14). And the reason he was called "the master of the land" can be found in the book "Brit Shalom," Parashat Tazria].

In the chapter "These are the forbidden" [(Chullin (44b)] he did not take any gift from the house of the Nasi and did not go to a meal when he was invited. [In Eruvin (54a), he had one student who was liable to be burned in a certain place; they said, "Leave him alone because he served a great man." But in Ein Yaakov, the version is that he had one student who was Rabbi Elazar ben Yaakov. Or according to the version of the Gemara, it is simply Rabbi Elazar; perhaps he is Rabbi Elazar the Great or Rabbi Elazar ben Shamua.

Arav Brachah, when we would go after Rabbi Elazar to the fields of Teficha, etc. (Shabbat (12b)). And in the chapter "The Ship," Arav Brachah saw those geese, etc. when he came before Rabbi Elazar, etc. The author of "Zaken Aharon" wrote that Rabbi Elazar is Rabbi Elazar ben Rashbi, the author of the Zohar, and see there regarding what Rabbi Elazar said about those who will be judged, meaning Jews who do not give their hearts to learn the secrets of the Torah, as stated in the Zohar in many places, etc.

However, he erred because this Rabbi Elazar is simply Rabbi Elazar ben Padata, for Rabbi Elazar ben Rashbi preceded him by much to Arav Brachah who came to Rabbi Elazar, and it is clear]. In Ta'anit [(25a)] he was very poor and they showed him thirteen rivers of balsam for the World to Come. And Rashi explained he was an Amora:

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.527:3

D) And he had a wise son named Rabbi Padeh, after his father [and Uri, the son of Eliezer, to Rabbi Padeh, his son (as mentioned)] and in Tosafot Niddah [(8a) s.v. "and Rabbi Padeh"]. And it is difficult, for in Berakhot [(5b)] it implies that he had no children. One could say that perhaps later a son was born to him, or that he had many sons who died, and this one remained alone [thus far].

And it is written in the book Brit Shalom, Parashat Tazria. And I believe that the incident in Ta'anit (25a) where he bled and became weak is the incident (as mentioned in the above Berakhot) when Rabbi Yochanan came to visit him and saw that Rabbi Eliezer was crying and said to him, "If it is because of the building of the court that is causing distress, then it can be said that when he was weak, he had no son, and due to this merit, that Rabbi Eliezer did not want the world to be destroyed and to be created in another constellation, for sustenance and children are not dependent on merit but on fate, and from that merit Rabbi Padeh was born, as mentioned].

And he is the son of the sister of Bar Kappara [(see above section P, regarding Bar Padeh, and see from where his lineage error arose)]:

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.527:4

5) A student of Rabbi Yochanan [(Temurah 25b)] and in Chapter 13 [(Kelim 135b)] said that if Rabbi Yochanan were to deny Rabbi Elazar, his student.

Thus, he referred to him as his student in Chapter 9 of Yevamot [(56b)] and in the Jerusalem Talmud, Shekalim [Chapter 2 and 2a, and Ma'aser Katan 3, Halacha 7, and Berakhot 2, Mishnah 1]. For Rabbi Elazar said a teaching and did not say in the name of Rabbi Yochanan, and Rabbi Yochanan was upset, and Rabbis Ami and Asi entered to appease him, but he was not appeased until Rabbi Yaakov bar Idi appeased him and said to him, "Elazar speaks in a general manner, and everyone knows that it is from you, just as Yehoshua spoke, and everyone knows that it is from Moshe." [And in the Tosafot on Yoma (4a), it states that Rabbi Elazar's sayings, even if he does not say, "Rabbi Yochanan in the name of Rabbi Yochanan said them." And in Yoma (53a)] when he was departing from Rabbi Yochanan, he would walk after him as one departs from the Divine Presence. [Baba Batra (7b) Rabbi Yochanan said to Rabbi Elazar, "My son, establish it with bolts," as Rashi explains, "he warned him to judge thus." And in Yevamot (72b) Rabbi Yochanan said to Rabbi Elazar, "Did you see Ben P'dat sitting and teaching like Moshe from the mouth of the Almighty?" Keritot (27a) Rabbi Elazar asked, etc., Rabbi Yochanan said, "How many years has this one grown among us and has not heard this law from me?"] In the chapter he was reading [(16a)] Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Asi the priests [(and Rabbi Chiya in the Jerusalem Talmud, this chapter)] made his wedding canopy [(thus he went to the study hall of Rabbi Yochanan)] therefore he married a woman in Tiberias, for there was Rabbi Yochanan. [And we find Rabbi Yochanan said in his name, Shabbat (31b)].

In Perek Arba'ah [(13a)] Rabbi Yochanan said to him, "Come and I will teach you the matter of the Chariot." He said to him, "My father, it is not difficult as long as the soul of Rabbi Yochanan rests." Rabbi Asi said to Rabbi Elazar, "Come and I will teach you the matter of the Chariot." He said to him, "If I merit, I will learn from your Rabbi, Rabbi Yochanan." [And it is difficult how he said, "Your Rabbi," for it is stated in Yevamot that Rabbi would go to extremes that Rabbi Yishmael said to destroy them, on Rabbi, your Rabbi, and did not say Rabbi (there). And it is possible that Rabbi Elazar was a close student of Rabbi Yochanan, therefore he said thus, as it is stated in the Jerusalem Talmud, Chapter 1 of Sanhedrin, a close student such as Rabbi Elazar to Rabbi Yochanan.

Menachot (Chapter 4) Bekhorot (5, 56) Rabbi Elazar said, "Rabbi Yochanan saw in a dream a great matter, I say." Rashi explains, "Last night, Rabbi Yochanan appeared to me in my dream; I know that today he will say a matter of reason."]

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.527:5

In Eruvin, chapter HaDar [(Sof 6a)] it is stated: "In the name of Shmuel, his teacher." [And in Bava Batra (chapter 2, 2) it is said that R' Eliezer does not have the teaching of Shmuel. And see Chulin (101b) that he served at a meal before Shmuel]. Also, R' was like his teacher in the chapter Kol HaBasar [(101b) and Bava Batra (135b) that he sent a message from our teacher, Rashi, R']. R' asked [Shabbat (93a) in Eruvin (65b) R' Eliezer asked a question, which is a typographical error and should be R' Elazar.

R' Eliezer was a student of R' Chiya, his teacher, as stated in the Jerusalem Talmud, Ketubot, chapter 9, halacha 5, and Kiddushin, chapter 1, end of halacha 4, and in the chapter Kira, "I served R' Chiya the Great," and in chapter 4 of Terumot, halacha 1, in the name of Chiya Rabba. And it seems that R' Oshaya was also his teacher. R' Eliezer said, R' Oshaya said, Shabbat (28b), Rosh Hashanah (4b, 14a), Berachot (32b), Pesachim (103a, 115a), Chagigah (17a), Makkot (8b, 24b), Chulin (74b).

R' Eliezer said, R' Hoshaya said, Yoma (41a), R' Oshaya said, R' Eliezer said, Pesachim (108a), perhaps R' Oshaya the second]. Resh Lakish was particular about him that he did not say in his name, Menachot [(93b)].

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.527:6

In Kiddushin [(L.G. 1b) regarding the matter that a Torah scholar is not permitted to stand, etc., it was ruled according to Rabbi Eliezer against Rabbi Yanai, even though he was a student of his student (for Rabbi Yanai was the teacher of Rabbi Yochanan, and Rabbi Yochanan was the teacher of Rabbi Eliezer). See Responsa Sh'eilat Ya'avetz, section 78, and section 116, and see Responsa Chavot Yair, above in the halachic ruling, section 28]:
