Entry 523 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon, a) [The Rambam wrote that he is mentioned only in Chapter 4 of Tractate Temurah, Mishnah 4, and is mentioned again in Mishnah 4 of Tractate Beitzah, and in Nega'im, Chapter 12, Mishnah 3. In Chulin (according to the version of Rabbi Aharon), in Bekhorot (according to the version of Rabbi Avraham), the acronym for Rabbi Shimon is explained by Rashi that there are many Mishnas and Beraitot that Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel said, and the Tana'im are accustomed to arrange them in the Mishnah in a general language (see Rabbi Yossi, son of Rabbi Yehudah)]:

b) Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai, was with his father in the cave for thirteen years and received sufferings of love, for he was the king's officer lest he had killed a man without guilt. [Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai reincarnated Moses, and his son Elazar reincarnated a youth who served in the idol of Micah, who was the son of Gershom, son of Moses, and the youth was thirteen years old; therefore, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his son were in the cave for thirteen years and studied Torah to rectify the youth (Sefer HaGilgulim, Chapter 36). And hence it is said that the name of the one was Eliezer, and it does not say "and the name of the second" but hints at Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon, as a rectification for Gershom (Berakhot 78a)].

And the ship owners gave him a great sum of money, which they were saved by his merit, and he was a lion, son of a lion, [and he ate a lot and his strength was great (Mishnah, Chagigah, Chapter 14). And see regarding his matters, in Pirkei Avot, Chapter "Give a portion to seven," he taught that a person should always be gentle like a reed (see Rabbi Shimon ben Eliezer)].

g) His colleague, Rabbi Yishmael, son of Rabbi Yosi, son of Chalafata, and a man of stature like him. He studied with Rabbi in the presence of Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel and Rabbi Yehoshua ben Karcha, and he was greater than Rabbi in Torah and in deeds. And Rabbi wished to take his wife, but she did not want to, and she said, "A vessel that has been used for sacred purposes..." [And when he would enter the house of assembly, the face of Rabbi would be darkened (Yerushalmi, Perek HaMetzaneh)].

And he had a son named Yosi, whom Rabbi Shimon, son of Rabbi Yosi ben Lakonia, his maternal uncle, taught [(in his honor)], and he was wise like his ancestors and equal to them, but he was not buried with them in the cave because he was not in distress in the cave with them. [Rabbi Eliezer ben Shimon said: Thus Rabbi Yochanan ben Berokah would say (Tosefta, Perek 1 of Menachot)]:

4) The Rosh wrote in Berakhot, chapter A"V, that he is Rabbi Elazar HaKalir, who is mentioned in the Pesikta as a poet. [(And so wrote the Shalshelet HaKabbalah (L"A 2) that in the Pesikta it is stated that he is Rabbi Elazar, son of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai). And so wrote Tosafot in Chagigah (13a). And he was called from all the dust of the merchants, a Tanna, a close one, and a poet (Vayikra Rabbah 30 and Shir HaShirim 3).

In his days, they would sanctify based on sight, for he never established anything except for a close one from the first day of the festival (see above regarding Rabbi Elazar ben Arach and Rabbi Elazar ben Yaakov)]:

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.523:4

He was buried in the cave. [In Bava Metzia (Chapter 4, Mishnah 2) it is discussed that he was buried with his father in a cave]. And for twenty-two years after his death, he was judged in his home. [A voice would proclaim from his loft, "So-and-so is worthy and so-and-so is guilty," and during all those years, no harmful creature would ascend in that place].
