Entry 489 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Elai. [The Rabbis said to Rabbi Abahu, "We have hidden (meaning we have shown) where Rabbi Elai is hidden (he was in hiding and the students did not know)." He said to them, "He is rejoicing with a maiden (he is happy tonight with a maiden and now he is sleeping) Aharanit (the daughter of a priest) Acharonit (his first wife has died and this one is the latter) Irunit (possessing beauty). And some say it is a tractate, Aharanit (the order of Kodshim, the service of Aaron) Acharonit (he finished another and began with this one) Irunit (deep and serious).

They said to Rabbi Elai, "Where is Rabbi Abahu hidden?" He said, "We consulted with the Maktir, etc." (Eruvin 53b). Rabbi Abahu, Rabbi Chanina bar Papi, Rabbi Yitzchak Naphcha, and Rabbi Elai were sitting. Rabbi Abba said, etc.

Rabbi Elai said, "Thus said Rav, etc." Go to Rabbi Shimon ben Elikum and Rabbi Elazar ben Padata (Baba Kamma 117b). The lineage is brought by Rabbi Ila, Rabbi Yirmiyah, Rabbi Abahu, Rabbi Yitzchak Naphcha, Rabbi Chanina bar Papi, Rabbi Elazar, and Rabbi Shimon, and it is written that perhaps he is Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish or Rabbi Shimon bar Abba, and he did not show their place, and in my opinion, they are those mentioned above.

And Rabbi Shimon is Rabbi Shimon ben Elikum and Rabbi Elai, and it is a typographical error, and likewise Rabbi Yirmiyah is a typographical error]:

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.489:1

Know that the genealogies were written by Rabbi Elai and Rabbi Ilai in Yoreh De'ah, and Rashi in Bechorot (Mishnah 2:2) wrote that there were two Rabbi Elai. Therefore, I have written who they were in their days, or their teacher and student.

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.489:2

Rabbi [Abba (may his memory be blessed) and consider Rabbi Abba bar Aḥa, and Rabbi Abahu (may his memory be blessed). Abaye challenges from Menachot (25a), Rabbi Avin said in the name of Rabbi Elai, in the name of Rabbi Elazar son of Rabbi Shimon from Yevamot (65b) several matters, and Rabbi Elazar ben Pedaḥ (may his memory be blessed) and in the Jerusalem Talmud, Terumot, chapter 2, halakha 1, it is taught that Rabbi Elai says in the name of Rabbi Eliezer, and at the beginning of Demai, Rabbi Elai says in the name of Rabbi Eliezer.

Rav Bruna, (Rabbi Zeira from Menachot 25a), Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba said etc., and Rabbi Elai in the name of Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Yossi in Bava Metzia (117a), and Rabbi Ḥanina bar Papi (may his memory be blessed), Rabbi Ḥanina said in Ḥullin (24b), he taught Rabbi Ḥanina in Tzipori there (25b), and in Eruvin (28b), the genealogies indicate that Rabbi Ḥanina was his teacher, and in Bava Kamma (65b) Rabbi Ḥanina was challenged by Rabbi Ilai etc., he said etc., he said, "May HaShem save us from this opinion," he said, "On the contrary, Rabbi Ḥanina etc." And in Shabbat (84a) Rabbi Ilai was challenged, he said to Rabbi Ḥanina etc., he said, "Rabbi Ḥanina etc.," he said, "On the contrary, Rabbi Ḥanina etc." And likewise in Ketubot (45b) he said to Rabbi Ḥanina etc., he said, "Rabbi Ḥanina etc.," he said, "On the contrary, Rabbi Ḥanina, and if Rabbi Ḥanina was his teacher, how could he challenge his student, and furthermore, how could the student say to his teacher, 'May HaShem save us,' etc., words of disgrace. In the name of Rabbi Yehuda bar Misparat.

In the name of Rabbi Yehuda bar Sefra. Rabbi Yochanan said in Shabbat (5a) 89 (50a) divided, Rabbi Yochanan ben Eliezer, see there. And Rabbi Yonatan. In the name of Rabbi Yosi ben Zimri, and Rabbi Yitzchak Nappaḥa (may his memory be blessed), in the name of Rabbi Yishmael from Bekhorot (41b).

Rabbi Yaakov bar Aḥa said in the name of our teacher in Berakhot (49a) and there (22a) Rabbi Ilai said Rabbi Aḥa bar Yaakov in the name of our teacher. He said to Ula, he asked Rabbi Bruna, his brother (see there). Rabbi said in Shabbat (112a) Eruvin (3a, 14a). Rabbi Shimon ben Eliezer (may his memory be blessed).

He said in Ketubot (49b) Zevachim (114a) Shabbat (28b). The genealogies bring Rabbi Ilai and Rabbi Shimon bar Abba and Rabbi Yaakov bar Zavda, and I did not find, and perhaps it is what is stated in Kiddushin (33b) Rabbi Elai and Rabbi Yaakov bar Zavdi stood before Rabbi Shimon bar Abba.]
