ר' אבא בר זבדא

ר' אבא בר זבדא

Entry 42 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Abba bar Zavda, brother of Rabbi Yehuda bar Zavda [(see above, Rava bar Zavda)], was a student of Rabbi Huna and was removed from the chapter of Rabbi Huna. [And he had no sons to perform levirate marriage (Sotah 2b). (And there, Rabbi Acha bar Zavda is a typographical error and in the Shas it is not corrected). And his colleagues, Rabbi Sheshet, Rabbi Gidal, and Rabbi Acha bar Yaakov (see there), sent Mar bar Mar to ask Rabbi Huna.

While this was happening, Rabbi Huna passed away, and Rabbi Abba bar Rava said, "Thus said Abba" (see there) in Bava Kamma (21a, 21b). Rabbi Ba bar Zavdi, Rabbi Abba's father, in the name of Rabbi Eliezer, ruled according to Rabbi Yochanan, that when Rabbi Ba bar Zavda came, they praised and extolled Rabbi Abba for having said a teaching because he was less than him. Jerusalem Talmud, Sanhedrin, chapter 3, halacha 6.

Rabbi Abba bar Zavda said in the name of Rabbi, blessings (11a, 16b) on Shabbat (Kiddushin 110a, 111a) and Sukkah (25a, 1b) many matters. In Bava Metzia (25b, 37b), Ketubot (7a), and in the Shita, he is counted among the students of Rabbi according to the principle that after one says in the name of Rabbi, he is his student.

However, I have seen in the Jerusalem Talmud, chapter 1 of Shabbat, that it teaches that a person should not sit before the book, and at the end of chapter 8 of creeping things, Rabbi Zeira said to Rabbi Ba bar Zavda, "Wise Rabbi, for you have said a teaching in the name of the one who said it," Rabbi Ada bar Ahava said to him in the name of the one who said it. It is clear that he did not recognize Rabbi and is not a student of Rabbi, even though I have seen there in the Jerusalem Talmud, chapter 2 of Shekalim, that Rabbi Zeira asked Rabbi Asi, "Do you recognize Rabbi?" etc., and Rabbi Ada bar Ahava said to him in the name of the one who said it.

I think it is a typographical error because in the two places mentioned above, the text states that Rabbi Zeira said to Rabbi Abba bar Zavda, "Wise Rabbi, for you have said a teaching in the name of the one who said it." Furthermore, it is known that Rabbi Asi was a student of Rabbi, and how could Rabbi Ada bar Ahava say to him, "He said to me in his name?" However, it is a question because I have seen in the Jerusalem Talmud, chapter "These are the findings," halacha 4, that Rabbi Ba bar Zavda found a donkey and went to ask Rabbi, and he said, "You did not do good deeds," etc., thus he recognized Rabbi. On Shabbat (19, 2b), Rabbi Ba Zavda is a typographical error and should be Rabbi Abba, and that matter is the same in Shabbat (Kiddushin 110a).

Rabbi Tanchuma in the name of Rabbi Chiya bar Menachama, and some say Rabbi Berechiah bar Chalbo in the name of Rava bar Zavdi, is mentioned in Vayikra, chapter 36, surely a typographical error. Rabbi Abba asked in the first chapter of Megillah. Rabbi Abba bar Avin asked. And Rabbi Abba bar Zutra.

And Rabbi Abba bar Mamlel. Rabbi Ada bar Ahava (see above). He said to Rabbi Elazar, "Rabbi, was it not so that it was read to him, 'Good are the two from the one?'" Megillah (5, 2b). Rabbi Gamliel asked a couple, and it is a question there.

Rabbi Zeira (see above) said, "Rabbi Huna said, Rabbi Abba bar Zavda," Ketubot (7a), even though he was his student, he said in his name. Rabbi Chagai in his name and asked him. In the name of Rabbi Choni of the house of Chavran. Rabbi Chanina said in Chulin (19), Kiddushin (15, 2b).

And Rabbi Yashiya went out to a fast. Rabbi Yehuda said in the name of Rabbi, Yevamot (chapter 3, 2b). In the name of Rabbi Yitzchak Chakulah, Jerusalem Talmud, chapter "Three times," and Rabbi Yitzchak Chakulah in the name of Rabbi Yehuda Nasi. Rabbi Levi Tzanbariya asked him.

He sent Mar bar Mar (see above). Rabbi Simon bar Zavda, perhaps he is his brother (see there). Rabbi said (see above). Rava and Rami bar Chama were challenging each other.

Rabbi Shmuel bar Yehuda in his name. In the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafata, Shekalim, chapter 4. In the name of Rabbi Eliezer, Shevi'it, chapter 2. Rabbi Sheshet (see above).

And Rabbi Tanchum bar Elai went out to a fast.
