Rabbi Abba bar Abba said in the name of Rabbi Yochanan: One may urinate in front of many, but one may not drink in front of many. There was an incident involving one who wished to urinate but could not, and his abdomen became swollen, as stated in the chapter on blemishes in Bechorot [(Mishnah 44b)]. Perhaps this is an error and it should be Rabbi Chiya bar Abba. [And the genealogy states in the gloss] that he is the father of Shmuel [(who was called Abba bar Abba)], and the proof is that in Bechorot [(there)] it is stated that Shmuel was expounding and wished to urinate, and he commanded that a garment be brought to serve as a partition, and he urinated.
His father was particular about this and commanded that he should expound even without a partition, and he went out and expounded that one may urinate in front of many. [Thus far. In the Gemara, it does not say "and he went out and expounded," but it requires clarification, for we do not find that Abba bar Abba, the father of Shmuel, would say in the name of Rabbi Yochanan. Indeed, the version before us is Rabbi Abba bar Chiya in the name of Rabbi Yochanan.]
