ר' אושעיא זעירא דמן חברייא

Entry 281 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Oshaia the Younger of the Chaveria explained: "The young one of the yeshiva." And it seems to me that he was called Oshaia the Younger, of the Chaveria, being from the members of the yeshiva. In the chapter of the slaughterer [(Leviticus 11:1)], and in the third chapter of Ta'anit [(24a)], Rashi explained that he was called this way because there was another Oshaia there [(and all his deeds were for the sake of Heaven there)].

And in the first chapter of Chulin [(12b)], the Tosafot wrote that Chaveria is the name of a place, as it is stated in Bereshit Rabbah [(13) regarding Avimi]. And the Aruch explained "the Younger" because there is a greater Oshaia. [And in Niddah (26a) Rashi and Tosafot did not write anything there].
