Entry 178 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Avin, Rabbi Zeira, and Rabbi Asi were before Rabbi Yochanan, and he received a precise teaching from Rabbi Yochanan like Rabbi Chiya bar Abba [(see Rav Yitzchak bar Yosef)]. He is a great sage, and in the chapter "Who Has Died" [(Kiddushin 136b), Rabin the Elder before Rav Pappa], it appears that in the days of Rabbi Abahu there were two sages named Rabbi Avin, one an elder and one a youth [(see Rabin the Elder) in Bava Batra (112b)].

Rabbi Avin and Rabbi Miasah and Rabbi Yirmiyah [said, etc. Rabbi Abahu and Rabbi Chanina bar Papi and Rabbi Yitzchak Nafcha said, etc. Rabbi Abahu said to Rabbi Yirmiyah, "Is the halacha like them or like you?" He said to him, "Like them, for I am the elder."]. Rabbi Yirmiyah said to Rabbi Avin, "When you go there before Rabbi Abahu." Rabbi Nachman bar Yitzchak said, "Not Rabbi Avin bar Chiya nor Rabbi Avin bar Kohana, but Rabin in general.

For what practical difference? To deceive from his own to his own" [Kiddushin (84a)].
