Entry 145 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Abimi taught Menachot in the house of Rav Chisda, and he did not learn from him except for the fact that he had a hatred before him to remember them favorably, and Rav Chisda learned from Abimi. And if Rav Chisda was his student, why did he not send for him? It seems that this would have been more beneficial. In the She'elot of Abimi, son of Rav Chisda, as it is stated in Eruvin (chapter of the orphans) and in the first chapter of Menachot, Rav Chisda said: "Kolpi Tavi swallowed from him, Abimi, regarding this matter" [so states the lineage].

Behold, I will copy for you the language of the Gemara, and you will see how he erred; I do not know what spirit passed before him. As it is stated in Eruvin (22a), Rav Chisda said, Abimi said: "The halacha is that for sixty days Rabbi Chiya bar Abin sat and said this teaching." Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak said to him: "But did Rabbi Meir not say thirty days?" He replied: "So said Rav Chisda from Abimi, Kolpi Tavi swallowed regarding this matter" (the meaning of which is that he taught me significant beatings regarding the orphans for Rabbi Meir for sixty days, and I would challenge him, as Rabbi Meir said thirty days, and he said to me that he came to announce that they are consecutive for thirty days, two and five, sixty) [so states Rashi].

And in the first chapter of Menachot (7a), Rabbi Abimi taught Menachot in the house of Rav Chisda, and he challenged: "And Abimi, son of Rav Chisda, taught," and Rav Chisda said: "Kolpi Tavi swallowed from Abimi," etc. (This implies that Rav Chisda is a student of Abimi, as Rashi). And it is answered that Abimi's tractate (of Menachot) was forgotten and he came before Rabbi Chiya to clarify the Gemara.

And to send (to Rav Chisda) that he should come to him, it seems that this would have been more beneficial (due to the effort you put in and found, Rashi). Behold, your eyes see that Rav Chisda is a student of Abimi, and how did he write "Abimi, son of Rav Chisda"? And if his intention was that he wrote in the She'elot of Abimi, son of Rav Chisda, that there he saw so, even though we do not find that Rav Chisda had a son named Abimi (thus Rav Chisda, and you will see the names of his sons), nevertheless, perhaps there was another son of Rav Chisda whose name was Abimi.

And what is stated as it is in the chapter of the orphans and the first chapter of Menachot regarding Rabbi Chiya, Kolpi Tavi, he understood that Rabbi Chiya that Abimi swallowed Kolpi Tavi is that Abimi is his son, and Rabbi Chiya struck him, Heaven forbid, out of this understanding, and it is clear. He encountered Rav Nachman (Menachot there). Rav Chisda said, Abimi: Sukkah (16b), Sotah (9a), Zevachim (26a), Menachot (Avodah Zarah 2b), Eruvin (5b), Bava Kamma (13b), Sanhedrin (15a, 1b).

Rav Yehuda said, Abimi: Eruvin (24a), and in the fourth chapter of Shabbat, Abaye said: "A mistake, and it should be Abimi," from Mar Yehuda in the name of Abimi, Chulin (48a), and Ula bar Menashiah in the name of Abimi.
