Rav HaMenuna [the Tosafot in Eruvin (S.G. 1) wrote that there were two, one a student of Rav and one a student of Rav Chisda (and see what I will write below as a necessity for this). He sat before Rav Ada bar Ahavah. Rav Acha bar Ada said in the name of Rav Menuna, said Rav. He sat before Rabbi Acha bar Eza.
In the name of Rabbi Asi, in Jerusalem, Kiddushin (2:2). Rav Bibi (see below, Rav Pappa). Rav Huna was his teacher. There in Eruvin (see below) Rav Huna said in the name of Rav Menuna (it seems that this Rav Menuna was the earlier one, a student of Rav and also learned from Rabbi Chanina, and the second Rav Menuna was a student of Rav Huna and a colleague of Rav Chisda, and it cannot be said that after Rav Hoshaya he was a student of Rav and Rav Menuna was also a student of Rav, and if so, perhaps Rav Menuna was a colleague of Rav Hoshaya.
However, it is said that Rav Menuna, when he was before Rav Hoshaya, did not have a wife (as mentioned that Rav Hoshaya would even inquire about him) and how could it be that his colleague did not have a wife, rather it must be that there were two, the second being his student and the earlier one being his colleague, both students of Rav). Rav Huna bar Sichora was before him. Rav Zeira said this matter was a question (it should be but rather, as stated in the Niyah).
And he said to Rav Zeira, do not sit on your legs until you tell me about Zivachim (K. 105b). Rav Zeira in the name of Rav Menuna, in Jerusalem, Kilayim (4:4), Horayot (1:1). Rabbi Zerika in his name, said Rav Menuna, this was taught to me by Rabbi Chanina and it is beloved like all scholars, Menachot (2:2) explained that he tasted and taught me. Rav Chisda and Rav Menuna were sitting at a meal, Rav Menuna took and blessed, Rav Chisda said to him, does the master not hold like this, etc.
He said to him, who will give us an iron nail and we will hear blessings (M. A. 2). And he said to Rav Chisda or Rav Chisda said to him, Shabbat (C. 97a). Rabbi Tavi in his name.
Before Rav Yehuda and he said to him, Rabbi Yochanan Menuna, you have come to the house of study where your teacher is being taught, Shavuot (34). Rav Yehuda bar Natan was with him. Rabbi Yonah in his name. Rabbi Yosef sat before Rav Menuna, Ketubot (N. 272) the Tosafot wrote it seems that Rav Yosef was younger than Rav Menuna and in the first chapter of Kiddushin (25) it seems that Rav Menuna was a student of Rav Chisda and Rabbi Yosef was a colleague of Rav Chisda, rather it must be that there were two Rav Menunas (and it is difficult because Rav Chisda said to him, master, as it is stated, for he was a colleague of Rav Chisda).
Rav Yosef said, this matter was a question for Rav Chisda and Rav Menuna resolved it for him. Rabbi Yaakov bar Acha in his name. He said to Rav Nachman, Zivachim (G. 103a). Rav Nachman said to Rava, now that you have returned and Rav Menuna has returned to Sura, we do not conduct business in Bava Batra (L. 31b).
Rabbi Nichah bar Saba in his name. Rabbi Sela in his name. He sat before Ula, Chulin (34b). He sat before Ula and was challenging in the matter, Ula said to him, what a great man, if not for the fact that he is not of noble descent (that they are not distinguished), how would he be?
He said to him, money for the skull, where shall it be given? He said to him, to the mouth of the river. He said, if so, from the mouth of the river you are a scholar, as it is stated in the first chapter of Yevamot (17a). In the name of Ula, Shabbat (Y. 10b).
Rav Pappa sat behind Rabbi Bibi and Rabbi Bibi was before him (as stated). Rava saw Rav Menuna that he prolonged in prayer, he said to him, they leave the life of the World to Come, Shabbat (Y. 1). It is written in the book Be'er Sheva, chapter 3 of Horayot, it is very difficult how Rava challenges Rav Menuna, for Rav Hoshaya is greater than Rava, for Rav Hoshaya is a colleague of Rav Chisda and Rava is a complete student of Rav Chisda.
In the first chapter of Sanhedrin (17b) they said in the house of Rav that he is Rav Menuna. And the Tosafot challenged that in Yevamot (3b) they said in the house of Rav, this is Rav Huna (as stated). And furthermore, how is it possible that Rav Hoshaya would say in the name of Rav Menuna, behold, Rav Chisda is a student of Rav Hoshaya and Rav Menuna is a student of Rav Chisda in the first chapter of Kiddushin (25).
However, we find that Rav Menuna learned before Rav in Eruvin (4) and there (N. 54a) Rav said to Rav Menuna, my son, if you have, do well for yourself, and in Bava Kamma (106) Rav Menuna is a student of Rav. And in the Tosafot there (A. 5) how did Rav Hoshaya say in the house of Rav about Rav Menuna who was a student of his student (meaning Rav Chisda was a student of Rav Hoshaya and Rav Menuna was a student of Rav Chisda) as it is implied in the chapter of the one who teaches (S.G. 1) and if so, the house of Rav is Rav Huna (as stated).
And it is strange what is written that Rav Menuna was a student of his student in the chapter of the one who teaches, for the Tosafot wrote there that this is the second Rav Hoshaya. Rava came to Sura, Rav Menuna said to him, Bava Metzia (6b), Rava encountered Rav Menuna, he said to him, teach me a Mishnah, Sanhedrin (61a). Rava bar Rav Ada in his name. He said to the Exilarch, what is the matter with the holy one, Shabbat (119a).
Rav Sheshet said, I say this, and Menuna said, etc., Eruvin (67a). The elders of the community did not come to the teachings of Rav Chisda, he said to Rav Menuna, go and hide them, etc., they asked him for a servant that his master had castrated him, etc., he did not have it in his hands, they said to him, what is your name? He said, Menuna. They said to him, your name is not Menuna but rather Karnuna (sitting at the corners, Rashi) and the Tosafot explained Menuna is the same as Cham Nunah of the warm fish and it is not so but rather Kar Nunah of the cold fish.
And the Ritva explained Menuna is a term for a trustworthy peg in the house of study, it is the opposite of Karnuna (Kiddushin 25). When Rav Menuna died, the heavens lowered their gates from the sky] and when the soul of Rav Menuna departed, Rava bar Rav Huna took them there [when they reached the bridge, the camels stood up, and that itinerant said, what is this? The Rabbis said to him, let us honor one another, the master said, let the master enter first, etc.
He said, if in my judgment, a man is a man (meaning Rava bar Rav Huna) let the camels of Rava bar Rav Huna pass as they are accustomed, and the teeth of that itinerant (because it is a disgrace to Rav Menuna) M. K. (25)]. And perhaps he is the second Rav Menuna whom Rav Chisda praises. For Rav Huna is a great man in the first chapter of Kiddushin [(29b) and it is stated there that Rav Huna turned his face from Rav Menuna who did not have a wife.
The burial cave of Rav Menuna is in the city where he lived, in the cave of Argiz, Rashi, Shabbat (19b) and it is written in the Aruch, a city close to Baghdad, about a distance of a parasang, and the place of Rav was there (there), therefore it seems that there were two Rav Menunas, one buried in Eretz Yisrael and one in Babel, for so it is in Rashi in Berachot (54b, 2) that his city is Baghdad, which is the important city of Babel since the destruction of Babel (as mentioned about Rav Chana in Baghdad) and see the journeys of Rabbi Benjamin. And in Gaiot Yisrael, it is written that they were buried in the village of Alma, Rava bar Rav Huna and Rav Menuna and Rav Huna and Rav Chananel, and it is called the cave of the Babylonians (see R.
A. ben Aruch)].
