Rabbi Ovadiah HaMon of Bertinoro commented on the Mishnayot [(and authored Sefer Mikra Kodesh)] in his native land of Italy and completed them in the Land of Israel, and died there in the year 5290 [(Sha'arei Kedusha 62b), his grave is in the Valley of Yehoshafat, Ba'al Yesod]. Rabbi Eliyahu Chayyim of Kovino authored Iggeret Chamudot [(there and in Sha'arei Kedusha 42b)]. Rabbi Yaakov Pollak whose reputation spread from one end of the world to the other - he was the first who through the sharpness of his understanding and acuity invented the pilpul of distinctions, through which Rabbi Yaakov in the land of those who sharpened the students, although this approach is not accepted by all sages of upright heart and by the great ones of the world, the wonders of the generation, whose minds do not rest with it.
Rabbi Yaakov and his father-in-law were with Rabbi Yitzchak of Margaliot in the community of Prague, and he passed away around the year 5290 [(Tzedah LaDerech) (see year 5317), and one responsum was printed in his name and in the name of the Gaon of Livna from Prague regarding agunah]. Rabbi Avraham Mintz, chief rabbi of Padua - I received a tradition about a case in the exile where a Jew was guarding a pledge for another Jew totaling 12,000 gold coins, and when the owner of the pledge came to take his deposit, the guardian denied it.
The claimant came before HaRav Mintz and presented his claims, and due to his dispute the matter went to other rabbis. The rulings began canceling each other, some favoring the depositor and some favoring the guardian, until the matter reached the kingdom of Poland. HaRav Rabbi Yaakov mentioned above favored HaRav Mintz, until the matter spread and they wrote bitterly against each other, with more than 100 rabbis on each side, until according to what was heard they excommunicated each other.
It was verified by the sages of Italy that both died in the same year on the same day [(Sha'arei Kedusha 64b)]. In year 5290, the Tiber River in Rome overflowed as had never occurred since the founding of the city, and 3,000 people and many animals died from the flood, and 400 houses fell, and much merchandise and money without number was lost, and Rome was afflicted greatly. But of the children of Israel, not one died - such merit [(HaRav Rabbi Yosef HaKohen 5290)].
Rabbi Shlomo Kedesh passed away in year 5290 [(see year 5296)].
