**Rav Chananel bar Chushiel** [(mentioned in the year 4850) Seder HaKabbalah, chapter 44, the Ra'avan wrote that he was a student of Rav Chushiel (but did not mention that he was his son) and composed the book HaMiktzuot, as is seen in the Mordechai, chapter Eilu Metziot and chapter HaShevuot (and in Responsa Ralbag, chapter 185)]. Also the book Chefetz [as is seen in the Hagahot Maimoni, laws of neighbors].
And Rav Nissim bar Yaakov ben Shahin [(brought in the Aruch, entry kaval)] received from Rav Chushiel and Rav Nissim received from Rav Hai who loved him greatly and sent him books in responsa for all his doubts. And Rav Shmuel HaLevi the Nagid [(see year 4880)] - through Rav Nissim he would drink from the waters of Rav Hai and he would give from his money to Rav Nissim because he was not wealthy, and afterward he married his daughter to Rav Yosef the Nagid for a wife, but she did not find favor in his eyes for she was not beautiful, but she was a master of Torah and fear of Heaven.
When her husband the Nagid was killed, she fled to the city of Alisana and the community supported her with great honor until the day of her death. And Rav Chananel was very wealthy, for in the Kairouan there were many merchants putting money into his pocket, and he had nine daughters and he left twelve thousand gold coins after his death. And likewise Rav Nissim had no son and both of them passed away [(without male children, Seder HaKabbalah chapter 44b)], and the Talmud ceased from the land of Africa and a small remnant remained in the city of Almeria in the hands of the children of Zagma'a and in the city of Kala'a HaMa'ak the house of Mar Shlomo the judge ben Formash, but they were not ordained in rabbinics and their name did not go forth in the world.
And these three - Rav Chananel and Rav Nissim and Rav Shmuel HaLevi the Nagid - were the first generation of rabbinics and the power of the Talmud returned to Sepharad [Yuchsin. (And in the responsa of Maharshal, section 29, Rav Chananel received from Rav Hai)]. Rabbi Chananel and Rabbi Natan, teachers of Rabbeinu Meir HaBavli, and Rav Natan author of the Aruch passed away in the year 4810 [(Tzeda LaDerech)].
In this generation lived Rabbi Chananel, a Roman man [(brought in the Rashba and in the Rambam, Laws of Chametz and Matzah, chapter 8, Haggadah 2)] and Rabbeinu Moshe from Pavia, a great sage [mentioned in Hagahot and in the Aruch (Seder HaKabbalah)].
