Seventh Generation of Amoraim
Year 4187 of the Jewish calendar.
Mereimar became head of the academy in Sura after the death of Rav Ashi from the year 4187 for 5 years. And according to the Raavad, this Mereimar and Mar the son of Rav Ashi and their colleagues worked on completing the Talmud, and it was not sealed until the year 4260 of the sixth [(should say: fifth)] millennium. And Yuchsin page 127 refutes his words, for it appears that Rav Huna the son of Natan was head after Rav Ashi, as implied in Moed Katan in the chapter "Those Shaved," 205, section 71.
And Rashbag mentions after the death of Rav Ashi: Rav Idi bar Avin, and does not mention either Rav Huna or Mereimar [(Tzemach David). And in Shir HaShirim, chapter 8, section 2 it writes: Mereimar and Rav Beviya received [authority] around the year 4185.] Rav Beviya from Bei Katil became head of the academy, and he also was head in Pumbedita in the year 4187, and he reigned for 6 years [(Tzemach David)].
