Rav Ashi died in 838 according to the Seleucid era, which is the year 4186. [And so it says in Ritva, first chapter of Avodah Zarah.] And he did not manage to complete the Talmud, and his students completed it 72 years after his death [see above year 4260. And the Smag in the introduction wrote that Rav Ashi died in the year 4180 to creation. And Rashbag wrote that he died in 842, which is the year 4191.
Yuchsin in the order of Kabbalah that the Rama copied writes that he died in 4185, and Shir HaShirim, page 35, section 2 writes that he died in 4187, and in Sefer HaKeritot it says 836, i.e., according to the Seleucid era, which is 4182.] And in his days, 7 heads of academies in Pumbedita died: Rav Pappa and Rav Chama and Rav Zevid, Rav Dimi, Rafram bar Pappa, Rav Chadna the Second, and Rav Acha bar Rava, and after them Rav Ashi died 14 years later [(Yuchsin in the order of Amoraim, generation 6). And Yuchsin wrote, also Mar Zutra and Mar Yeimar, that is 9.
And Shir HaShirim, page 35, section 2 writes that 6 heads of academies died, and lists: Rav Eina, Rav Zevid, Rav Dima, Rav Chadna, Rav Acha son of Rava, Ravina. And in truth Ravina was after the death of Rav Ashi. Rashbag wrote in Yuchsin: and after Rav Ashi there were two academies].
