**The compilation** of the Mishnayot was accepted and agreed upon by all of Yisrael, and they studied them in the yeshiva of Eretz Yisrael, his two sons Rabban Gamliel and Rabban Shimon, and Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Oshaya, Rabbi Chanina and Rabbi Yochanan and their colleagues. And in the yeshiva of Bavel, Rav and Shmuel the students of Rebbi studied them, for they descended to Bavel in year 3979, at the end of Rebbi's days.

Thus Rebbi lived 100...

**Rav Huna** was made Rosh Galuta (Exilarch) in the days of Rebbi and died during the lifetime of Rav in Bavel and was buried in Eretz Yisrael [(Tzeda)].

**Rabban** Gamliel the 4th and Rabban Shimon the 5th were the sons of Rebbi. Rabban Gamliel received his leadership during his father's lifetime, and to Rabban Shimon he transmitted the orders of wisdom. They remained in Eretz Yisrael with Rabbi Chiya, Rabbi Oshaya, Rabbi Chanina, and Rabbi Yochanan [(Tzeda)].

**Rabbi Chiya Rabbah** was a student of Rebbi, and Rabbi Oshaya. Rabbi Chiya was a Tanna on one side and an Amora on the other side [(see there)].

**The Order of the Amora'im:**

**Amora'im** are called "those who say the teaching upon it" meaning translators, for from the time of the sealing of the Mishnayot and Beraitot, no Beit Din arose to nullify their words except to explain them. Therefore they are called Amora'im, meaning interpreters [(Tosafot Perek HaKore'ah)].

**Rav and Shmuel** were students of Rebbi. Rav was also a student of Rabbi Chiya, and Rav descended to Bavel in 3979 (not according to the opinion of Yuchsin [see year 3949]). Yuchsin page 115 and Rashba and Dorot Olam: in the days of Rav, Rav descended to Bavel in 530 [(it should say 535)] to the kingdom of Yavan [i.e., Seleucid era], which is 3979 [thus far]. Shmuel was also called Nehardea'a, and Rav went to Sura as head of the yeshiva...

**Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi** - some place him among the Tanna'im and some among the Amora'im. He was the teacher of Rabbi Yochanan [(see there). Some say he was a student of Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi].
