The Patriarchs
2123AM

Year 2123 of the Jewish calendar.

1

And Avraham commanded his son Yitzchak to keep the commandments of HaShem [(see there)] and he blessed him. And Avraham died fifteen years into the lives of Yaakov and Esav [(this is Year 2123). In Sefer Den Yedin chapter 46. And in Yalkut Lech Lecha, chapter 378, 272: Avraham died in Tevet.

"You shall be buried at a good old age"—the letters spell Tevet (see Year 1948).] And all the inhabitants of the land of Canaan came with their kings and officers, and all the inhabitants of the land of Charan and all the families of Avraham and all the sons of the concubines, to bury Avraham. And they wept and eulogized him, even small children and the inhabitants of the land all wept, for Avraham was good to all and upright with God and people.

And there was none who feared God like him from his youth all the days of his life. At that time, after the death of Avraham, Esav went to hunt game as usual. And Nimrod king of Bavel, who is Amraphel, went as usual with his warriors to hunt game, also in the field. And Nimrod had been watching Esav all the days, for jealousy had fallen in Nimrod's heart toward Esav all the days.

And it was on that day that Esav went to hunt in the field and found Nimrod walking with two of his men, and all his warriors had gone far from him, going this way and that to hunt. And Esav hid from Nimrod and ambushed him in the wilderness. And Nimrod came to the place where Esav was, and Esav rose against him suddenly from the place where he had ambushed him and drew his sword and ran toward Nimrod and cut off his head.

And Esav fought with the two men who were with Nimrod a great battle, and they cried out against him, and Esav turned to them and struck and killed them with his sword. And all the warriors of Nimrod heard the sound of the cry from afar and recognized the voices of the two men, and they ran to know what this was. And when Esav saw that Nimrod's warriors were coming from afar, he took the precious garments of Nimrod [(see Year 1657).

And in the Zohar on Parshat Toldot, these were the garments that belonged to Adam HaRishon, and at the time of the blessings Yaakov took them. And in the Midrash section 120 and Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer chapter 52, he killed Nimrod and Chivur his son (and in Targum Yonatan, Chanoch his son—typographical error)]. And Esav fled with them and hid them in his house. And he came tired and weary from fear, and his soul was anxious unto death.

And when he was distressed, he approached Yaakov his brother and sat before him and said, "Behold, I am about to die, and what is this birthright to me?" [(And this is what is meant by "Behold, I am about to die"—why did he fear? For what is one day different from another? Rather, he feared lest he be killed because of the death of Nimrod, or lest Nimrod's friends ambush him and kill him. And "he was tired" because he killed Nimrod and his two men, and he fled and escaped.

The author says.)] And Yaakov acted wisely and acquired the birthright together with Esav's portion in the cave that Avraham acquired, and he wrote it in a book with witnesses. [Therefore the acquisition of the birthright was when he was fifteen years old, which is Year 2123.] And Yaakov gave him a sword in exchange for the birthright [(see Year 1787 in the first millennium)]. And the days of Nimrod's life were two hundred fifteen years [(therefore he was born in Year 1908, see Year 1788)].

And he reigned over all the people of the land for one hundred eighty-four years. And his men brought him to Bavel and buried him there in the city. And his kingdom was divided into many parts, and all the people of the house of Nimrod were servants to all the kings of the land for many days. After Avraham's death in that year there was a very heavy famine, and Yitzchak went because of the famine to the land of Egypt.

And HaShem appeared to him at night and said, "Do not go down to Egypt; go to Gerar to Avimelech king of the Philistines," etc. And he dwelt in the outer house of the king, and Yitzchak's house was opposite the king's house. And Avimelech looked through the window, and behold Yitzchak was sporting with Rivkah his wife, etc. And the king commanded and they dressed both of them in royal garments and paraded them through the streets of the city and proclaimed before them, "Whoever touches this man or his wife shall die." And the king gave him fields and vineyards and the best of the land, and he grew great and had flocks and possessions.

And when the days of the famine ended, Yitzchak returned to Chevron as HaShem had commanded him [(Sefer HaYashar)].
