They said: "He who despised the king and his gods - by fire let him be burned.

Therefore let them heat the brick furnace in Kasdim for three days and three nights and throw Abraham into it." About 900,000 men gathered, and all the women and children gathered at the hills to watch. When the king's magicians saw Abraham, they said to the king: "Is this not the man about whom we told the king 50 years ago? And behold, his father transgressed your word and hid him and brought you another child and you killed him." The king's anger burned, etc.

Terach was afraid because the king was angry and said: "Truly the magicians spoke - my son was hidden from me." The king said: "How did you do this thing?" Terach answered: "My compassion was stirred for my son and I took the servant's son." The king said: "Who advised you this thing?" He was very afraid and said: "Haran my older son advised me in this." Haran was 32 years old when Abraham was born. Haran did not advise his father anything - Terach only spoke to save himself from the king for he feared greatly.

The king said: "Haran your son who advised you this thing shall die by fire with Abraham." Haran inclined at that time after Abraham but hid the matter in his heart. Haran said to his heart: "The king has seized Abraham. If Abraham prevails over the king, I will go after him. If the king prevails, I will go after the king." The king commanded and they stripped them of their garments and all their clothes - only undergarments were on them - and bound their hands and feet with flax ropes and threw them into the fiery furnace.

Hashem descended and saved Abraham from the fire and he was not burned, but all the ropes that bound him were burned. Abraham walked in the fire for three days and three nights, and all the king's servants saw him. Haran, when they threw him, was burned and became ashes, for his heart was not whole with Hashem. The men who threw them - the flame rose upon them and they burned - twelve men were burned.

The king's servants came and told the king that Abraham was walking in the fire, and also the undergarments upon him were not burned, only the binding ropes burned. The king did not believe them and sent other trustworthy ministers to see, and they testified to the king. The king went to see and saw Abraham walking and also coming within the fire. He saw Haran's body burned and the king was amazed.

He commanded to take Abraham out but they could not because flames rose to meet them and they retreated. The king was angry with all his servants saying: "Hurry and take out Abraham lest you die." Abraham came out and stood before the king.

It is said [In Chelek (page 95) regarding Sennacherib who came against Hezekiah with 45,000 sons of kings, 80,000, and 60,000, etc. - and so they came against Abraham. Rashi explains: when he fought with the four kings, see Chiddushei Batei and in Chelek (128, 2) that the kings came against Abraham. In the Zohar Lech Lecha, the ultimate intention of the kings was because of Abraham to blind the eyes of the world from Abraham.

But in Targum Yonatan on Isaiah, section 102, also they came against Abraham when he was thrown into the fiery furnace. Also in Midrash Tehillim section 118, all the nations gathered to Abraham and said, "From whom etc." From the time they threw him into the furnace. In the Zohar Lech Lecha, on that day all the nations knew that Hashem saved Abraham from the fiery furnace and said, "We see that You trust in Hashem, who taught us, etc."]

Haran was 82 years old when he died in Ur Kasdim [(that was the year 1998)]. The king and the ministers and all the inhabitants of the land saw that Abraham was saved from the fire, and they came and bowed to him. Abraham said to them: "Do not bow to me, but bow to the eternal God who made you and serve Him and walk in His ways," etc., "and He will save all who trust in Him." The king gave Abraham many gifts and two of the great servants in the king's house - one named Oni and the second Eliezer [(see year 2040 that he was Nimrod's son)].

Also all the king's ministers and servants gave Abraham gifts of silver and gold and pearls, and they sent him from them in peace. About three hundred men of the king's servants went after Abraham and clung to him. All his father's house went after him, and Abraham turned the hearts of the people to serve Hashem.
