Before the Flood
1558AM

Year 1558 of the Jewish calendar.

1

**Shem** was born in year 1558, 102 years into the life of Noah, and he lived 600 years and was born circumcised [(Avot de-Rabbi Natan)]. And in his days they decreed concerning the harlots [(Avodah Zarah 36b)]. He is Malki-Tzedek, and he was the first to begin building the walls of Jerusalem and he saw twelve generations [(Seder HaDorot)]. He prophesied for 400 years but they did not accept from him [(Tanna d'Vei Eliyahu chapter 28 and Yalkut, beginning of Balak)].

And the Zohar wrote that perhaps he prophesied (from after the Flood) until Abraham was circumcised, which was 392 years, and this is close to 400 years—thus ends the citation (see Ba'al HaTurim 148). Abel was reincarnated into Shem (see Japheth). Shem was reincarnated into Jacob (Yalkut Re'uveni, section on gilgulim 348 and in Parshat Toldot 49b). He was reincarnated into Samson (see Ba'al HaTurim 419).

Shem-Noah-Moses are one root in two (see Ba'al HaTurim 435)]:
