רבן גמליאל בנו של ר' יהודה הנשיא

Entry 870 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabban Gamliel, the son of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, is our holy teacher, and because it was the will of his father that he should be the Nasi after him, he is established in the Mishnah [(Perek 2 of Avot)]. [(And see the Ten Sayings, Saying of Investigate the Law, Part 2, Chapter 19 in the commentary of Yad Yehuda, Section 41). The Abarbanel wrote how this Mishnah was composed, that Rabban Gamliel said it when he was Nasi after the death of Rabbi, his father, within the compilation of the Mishnah which Rabbi made during his lifetime.

It can be said that it was said during the lifetime of his father, and his father wrote it in the name of Rabban Gamliel, his son, and when he became Nasi after the death of Rabbi, they added the word Rabban because of the presidency, or that this Mishnah was added after the death of Rabbi. You will find something similar in Pesachim (see above Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, it seems primarily that the sages of the generation later added to the Mishnah, but in the aforementioned commentary of Yad Yehuda, it is written according to the Rabbi R.L., author of the Ten Sayings, it seems primarily that Rabbi himself wrote the words of his son in his name)].

He is the eldest son and fills the place of his father in humility, and Rabbi Shimon, his brother, is greater than him in wisdom [(see there)] in Ketubot [(63b). And in the chain of tradition, Rabbi commanded that Rabban Gamliel, his younger son, should be Nasi because he was very humble, even though Rabban Shimon, his elder son, was wiser, thus he testified]. He is the last of the Tanaim. And wherever Rav Safra teaches in the name of one of the house of Rabbi, it is this Rabban Gamliel [(see there)], and in Chulin [(106a)] he was eating pure foods [(and Rabbi Yochanan asked him there)] and in Shabbat [(91b)] it is taught that Rabban Gamliel the son of Rabbi says, "Whoever has mercy on creatures, they have mercy on him from Heaven" [(see above Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh, who is also called Rabban Gamliel the son of Rabbi), Ketubot (10b) he placed it upon a barrel.

Menachot (Perek 4, Mishnah 2) Rabban Gamliel the son of Rabbi. Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, his son, and Hillel, his son (see there). The genealogy states that Rabban Gamliel in the book of the Geonim, may their memory be blessed, mentions this order: our holy teacher and Rabban Gamliel his son and Yehuda HaNasi his son, who established the intercalation (and there is a typographical error here because Hillel the son of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi (see there) established the intercalation) as brought by Rabbi Shimon bar Tzemach Duran in the commentary on the warnings, and Rabban Gamliel, the son of this Hillel, and Yehuda his son, and Rabban Gamliel the later, in the year 570 for documents, thus he concluded.

And see Part 1, year 218, what I wrote there about this because there is a typographical error here. And see Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel the Elder from the Mishnah].
