Rabbi Berachia, the son of Rabbi Simon, the son of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai, swallowed a creeping thing and whispered the species upon it, and it came out, and he said, "Would that he die!" And he did not hear this, and it was as if he had sinned, etc., and he died in holiness. [The editor of the Aruch wrote the entry for Bilam in the name of a Midrash at the end of Lamentations, but it is found only in Bereishit Rabbah in the chapter "I have seen an evil," and there the version is "the son of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai," but the version of the Aruch is "the son of the son of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai." And thus the Midrash states: "He swallowed, went, and brought one of those from the house..." that he would expel his swallowing through a whisper. Then Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi asked that man what you said about him, and thus the verse is such and such.
He said it was better that they buried his son so that you should not say this verse. And thus it was that his son died as an unintentional sin, etc. And there Rabbi Yirmiyah of Shabash (see there) took a crown of olive and tied it upon his head. Shmuel heard and said, "Be at ease, for the head of the righteous does not act this way." And thus it was for me.
All this is in the Midrash Kohelet. And the matter of Rabbi Yirmiyah of Shabash mentioned above is also in the Midrash Lamentations in the chapter "The crown of our head has fallen." This caused the error of the author of the Aruch, who thought that the matter of the son of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai was also written in the Midrash Lamentations, and it is clear.]
