Ben Betira [Mishnah Shabbat 17:1; Pesachim 3:3; 4:3; Gittin 5:7; Avodah Zarah 1:6; Zevachim 1:3; Menachot 1:2.] is commonly identified as Rabbi Yehoshua. [So states the Rambam in his introduction to Zeraim (see there) and in Hilchot Olam, chapter 127, that Ben Betira is Rabbi Yehuda, but due to necessity he said in the first chapter of Taanit that it should be attributed to Rabbi Yehoshua ben Betira.] He disagrees with Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hanania in the first chapter of Zevachim. [And in Pesachim 3, in Mishnah (6:1) and in Mishnah (53:1) he argues with Rabbi Yehuda in Rosh Hashanah (29:2) regarding Arivah ben Betira, as Rashi explains that they were the great ones of the generation. And there is Rabbi Yonatan ben Betira] during the time of Shmaya and Avtalion [(see Rabbi Yehuda in Bava Batra)].
And they were humble [Baba Metzia (5:1)] that the sons of Betira relinquished their leadership to Hillel, who began his leadership a hundred years before the destruction. [See Ribi'ah, who was after the destruction, and it is evident that there were two.]
