ר' אבא בר בר חנא

ר' אבא בר בר חנא

Entry 65 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Abba bar Bar Chana, who is referred to as Rabba bar Chana [(see there)], was a student of Rabbi Yochanan, and it appears that his name was Abba [(and so writes Rashi in Bava Batra 5a)] because he said, "Every Abba is a donkey," and all of Rabba bar Chana's discussions were contentious. He sat before Rabbi Yehuda and followed Rabbi Elazar, and he is not Rabba bar Chana, the nephew of Rabbi Chiya, for he was a teacher during the time of Rabbi [(see there)].

This one sat before Rabbi Yehuda, and Rabbi Yehuda was born on the day that Rabbi died [and it requires investigation because it seems that Rabba bar Chana, who was with Rabbi Yehuda, is the nephew of Rabbi Chiya who descended to Babylon, and also Rabbi Yehuda was in Babylon.

However, Rabba bar Chana, a student of Rabbi Yochanan, was in Eretz Yisrael, and he recounted the stories of the chapter of the ship to Rabbi Elazar who was in Eretz Yisrael (see above regarding Ilfa)].
