ר' אלכסנדרי

Entry 482 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Alexandri [after he prayed, as mentioned in Berakhot (17a). He was the teacher of Ahavah, the father of Rav Ada (see there). Rav Acha sought to see him in a dream (see Pappus)]. He was during the time of Abaye, [I do not know from where it is derived, even though in Ketubot (Avodah Zarah 2b) it is stated that Abaye said to exclude one who did not fulfill even one letter, there is no proof that he was in his generation.

It is also unlikely, for Rabbi Yochanan was taught by Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus, and Rabbi Eliezer was the teacher of Rabbi Yochanan, and this requires investigation. Rabbi Chiya bar Abba said in Nedarim (1a) several teachings, and he wished to engage in the burial of Rabbi Chanina bar Pappa, as stated in Ketubot (there), and Rabbi Eliezer in Berakhot (59a) mentioned two matters, and in Yoma (53b) Rabbi Alexandri said, Rabbi Eliezer posed a question, in Chullin (98a) two matters, and there (99b) Rabbi Alexandri said, "Anyone who engages in Torah for its own sake..." Rabbi said...

Rabbi Yochanan said... Levi said..., and in the Jerusalem Talmud at the end of Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus is mentioned as Rabbi Alexandri. And in Tanchuma at the end of Parashat Tetzaveh. Rabbi Mordechai said in Yoma (there).

And this requires investigation, for Rabbi Mordechai was a student of Rav Ashi, who lived a long time after Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus. Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmani in his name, Tanchuma in the mountain. And it is necessary to conclude that Rabbi Alexandri, the teacher of Ahavah, the father of Rav Ada, is another person, for Rav Ada was born when Rabbi passed away.]
