ר' אבא בנו של ר' חייא בר אבא (הכהן)

Entry 39 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Abba, son of Rabbi Chiya bar Abba (the Kohen) [and in the Jerusalem Talmud, in the chapter of Kira, the Mishnah states: "a warming pot that was moved," etc. Rabbi Ba, son of the son of Rabbi Chiya bar Ba, and perhaps there is a scribal error and it should be Rabbi Ba, son of Rabbi Chiya bar Ba. They disagreed about this: Rabbi Yaakov bar Idi and Rabbi Acha (in the house of Chama) bar Chanina. One said to them: Rabbi Abba, son of Rabbi Chiya bar Abba, thus said Rabbi Chiya bar Abba, who said in the name of Rabbi Yochanan (Berachot, chapter 1, Mishnah 1).

The sages taught: Yochanan in Gittin (56b), Temurah (14b), how to bless (43b, 48a, 61b), Megillah (19b), how many things. It is learned from the colleagues of Rabbi Abba bar Chiya bar Abba, and from whom? Rabbi Zeira; and some say from the colleagues of Rabbi Zeira from Rabbi Zeira; and from whom? Rabbi Abba, son of Rabbi Chiya bar Abba (Mo'ed Katan 22a).

Above, Rabbi Acha]. Rabbi Abba and Rabbi Zeira learned from Rabbi Abba bar Chiya, and Rabbi Zeira called him "Saba" (grandfather) and he was in the marketplace of Kesarim, the place of Rabbi Abahu, and Rabbi Ami was there. Rabbi Yochanan and Rabbi Zeira said to Rabbi Ami: "Did you not leave us to inquire from the elder Rabbi Abba, who heard from his father Rabbi Chiya, and Rabbi Chiya from Rabbi Yochanan" [(Chulin 86b).

Rabbi Zeira asked Rabbi Yanai on Shabbat (121b), and in Midrash Rabba, Parashat Bechukotai, it is said in the name of Rabbi Yonatan. Rabbi Abba bar Chiya posed a question to his father, who was always slaughtered (59b). Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi (Rashi explains: son of the son of Rabbi) ruled, and they did not agree with him, regarding this (37a)].
