Entry 302 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rab Acha bar Ada [Chagigah (19b)] said: Rabbi Menuna [said in the name of Rav, Sukkah (21b), Eruvin (Avodah Zarah (2b)), and in Avodah Zarah (19b) Rav Acha bar Abba said in the name of Rav Menuna said in the name of Rav]. And he is the father of Rav Pappa and heard from Rabbi. [What is meant by "heard from Rabbi" is a mistake, for Rav Pappa said that his father Rav Acha bar Abba heard from Rav (there).

Rav Acha, the son of Rava, said to Rav Ashi: Did you not hear this that Rav Acha bar Ada said: Rabbi Menuna said in the name of Rav? When he came, he said in the West, etc. (Kiddushin (30a), Nedarim (38a)). Rabbi Yehuda said: Rav Pappa divided (Chullin (20b)). Rabbi Yitzchak said: Shabbat (17b), Avodah Zarah (36b).

In the name of Ulla, Bava Metzia (117b). Rava permitted him a Sukkah (26a). And he was very old, and his hands trembled because of old age, and one forged his signature, as his hands were weak (Baba Batra (67a)). Rav Acha bar Rav Ada said to Rav Ashi in Bava Metzia (8a).

And it requires investigation, for the Yuchsin wrote that Rav Acha was very old in the time of Rava, and it is also evident that one forged his signature as stated above and came before Rava. And if he was very old in the days of Rava, how could he say to Rav Ashi that he was born when Rava died? It must be that Rav Ashi was the ancient one. And what the Yuchsin wrote: "Rabbi Acha bar Abba said Rav" is a mistake.
