ר' אושעיא רבה

ר' אושעיא רבה

Entry 271 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Oshaia the Great. A) Bar Chama Bar Bisna, and the triple cord is Rabbi Oshaia Bar Chama Bar Bisna [(see there), and the Tosafot wrote in P'Ch"Y (N'Tz A') that Rabbi Oshaia preceded in the dispute before his father Rabbi Chama, as he was greater in stature, as stated regarding the son of the earlier ones, like the opening of a hall, this is Rabbi Oshaia]. And he is called "Bar Rabbi." [Yevamot (46b, 121b) that he contended with five elders.

Eruvin (53a) Chagigah (7a)] meaning a great person in Torah. [Rashi (see Bar Rabbi)]:

(b) And he [Rabbi Chiya] together with Rabbi Oshaya made braytot and Tosefta and all teachings that Rabbi Chiya did not teach are considered a disruption and they should not be recorded in the study hall. [(Rashi, Chulin 131b)] They arranged braytot and scrutinized the words of each sage to say as he said, but there are many other Tana'im who add to their Mishnah in a similar manner. And in the first chapter of Shabbat, it is taught: "Ashes" and it is taught: "Dust." Rashi explains: one teaching is from Rabbi Chiya and one teaching is from Rabbi Oshaya.

From this, it appears that every teaching in the Talmud is from these five. And in Baba Kamma, Rabbi Oshaya teaches the thirteen principles of damages and Rabbi Chiya teaches twenty-four. In the first chapter of Gozel Kama [(34b)], it is stated: since the Mishnahs were before Rabbi, rather Rabbi arranged them, but the braytot that Rabbi Chiya, his student, taught are what Rabbi added to the Mishnahs.

According to this, it is clear what Rabbi Yossi said: "Fortunate are you, vessels that you have emerged in purity." And in the book Bereshit Rabbah that was compiled [(as written in the introduction of the book Rokach, which begins with "And I will be delights," gematria of our Rabbi Oshaya the Great, a typographical error, and it seems to me that it should say: this is Rabbi Oshaya the Great)] is to explain the words of the Mishnah. [And the Tzemach David wrote that it is not Bereshit Rabbah that was compiled by Rabbi Bar Nachmani. And it is questionable that in our Bereshit Rabbah, which begins with Rabbi Oshaya the Great, it opens with "And I will be delights" according to what the Rokach wrote that he signed his name.

And this Bereshit Rabbah does not contain an explanation of the Mishnah, only Jerusalem Aggadot, which seems that its author was Rabbi Bar Nachmani. (And see Rabbi, who is the author of Midrash Rabbah). The Ra'avad wrote that Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Oshaya wrote the Mekilta [(see above, Abba Arikha, and Rabbi Yishmael and Ben Azzai)].

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.271:2

3) And he received from his father and from Bar Kafra and from Rabbi Chiya and from the court of Rabbi. [Rabbi Oshaia was often found before Bar Kafra, who was proficient, and he came before Rabbi Chiya. One day, he encountered him and Rabbi Oshaia asked Bar Kafra, "What does the Babylonian (meaning Rabbi Chiya) say about this?" And Rabbi Oshaia was silent and said, "Bar Kafra, you need to listen to the words of Chiya" (and he spoke disparagingly to him), as it is stated in Keritot (8a).

The father of Rabbi Oshaia and Bar Kafra disagreed... What, did Rabbi Oshaia not hear from his father? And it was answered: No, Rabbi Oshaia heard from Bar Kafra, his teacher, as it is stated in Makkot (24a)]. And his colleagues did not grasp the end of his opinion, like Rabbi Meir [as stated in Eruvin (53a)].

And Rabbi Yochanan's teacher was for eight years. [However, the version before us has changed (see above regarding Rabbi Yochanan) in Beitzah (37b) where Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua disagree. In Ketubot (111b), the brothers of Rabba sent a message. Yitzchak, Shimon, and Oshaia said the same thing. Yitzchak is Rabbi Yitzchak Nafcha.

Shimon is Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi, and some say this refers to him. Oshaia is Rabbi Oshaia bar Rabbi. And Maharit wrote there: It is strange why Rabbi Oshaia is considered after the student of Rabbi Yochanan, since Rabbi Oshaia was the teacher of Rabbi Yochanan, as stated. In the chapter of the homeowner, Rabbi Yochanan and Rabbi Eliezer asked from him.

In the Jerusalem Talmud, in the chapter of the uncircumcised, halacha 2, and in the chapter of the ten genealogies, halacha 6, with Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi and Rabbi Yochanan. The daughter-in-law came before Rabbi Chiya and he prohibited her. Rabbi Yishmael bar Rabbi Yosi said in the chapter of the window (chapter 1). And Rabbi Oshaia from Rabbi Chiya (see there).

In the chapter of the stove (38b), once we were standing above Rabbi Chiya the Great]:

Because there are places that are called Osha'ya with an Aleph, and there are those that are called Hosha'ya. In some of them, one must question whether it refers to Rabbi Osha'ya the aforementioned or another Rabbi Osha'ya. And there is Rabbi Osha'ya and there is Rav Osha'ya.

Therefore, I have arranged according to the Aleph-Bet at the end of all those who are simply called Rabbi or Rav Osha'ya, whether they are their students, their teachers, or their colleagues, and you will understand.
