ר' אבא בר זימנא

Entry 27 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Abba bar Zimina in the name of Eliezer the Small, if the earlier ones are angels. [So it is written in Yichusin, indeed, in the first chapter of Shabbat (12b) in Tosafot, Rabbi Abba bar Zimina in the name of Eliezer the Small, if the earlier ones, etc., and in Shas, they did not correct it. And it is written thus in Yichusin that Eliezer the Small was a great sage, and his disciple, a wise and pious man, Rabbi Abba bar Zimuna, but he relied upon the support of a broken reed, the version in Tosafot which said in the name of Eliezer the Small that the word Eliezer is a typographical error, for Tosafot took their words from Bereishit Rabbah, and their intention is to say in Parashat Chayei Sarah, Rabbi Abba bar Zimina said to Rabbi Zairah if he is an earlier one, etc., and so it is in the Jerusalem Talmud, Shekalim 15, and at the end of Rosh Hashanah and at the beginning of Demai.

And in the Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat (112b) Rabbi Zira said (Rava, the version before us, and it is a typographical error and should be) Rabbi Abba bar Zimuna said Rabbi (and in our Gemara the word Rabbi is not) if the earlier ones, etc., and in the Jerusalem Talmud, at the end of the chapter of those who ate, Rabbi Yonah and Rabbi Abba bar Zimina in the name of Zairah. And in the aforementioned chapter, Mishnah 3, Rabbi Abba bar Zimina served before Zairah, he poured him a cup, and in the chapter of General Principles, Halacha 2, he was reclining with him.

And Yichusin brought that Rabbi Abba bar Zimina said to Rabbi Abahu that it is necessary to mention a semblance of the event, meaning on Shabbat and Yom Tov in the third blessing, since Rabbi Zairah was concerned.

Thus far the text. And I saw in the Jerusalem Talmud, in the chapter How to Bless, Mishnah 1, it is written: What is to be mentioned in it a semblance of the event? Rabbi Abba bar Zimina said: Rabbi Zairah would mention a semblance of the event. Rabbi Yirmiyah said: Since Rabbi Zairah was concerned, we need to be cautious.

Thus far the text. Therefore, what is written that he said to Rabbi Abahu is a typographical error. Behold, the truth will testify for itself that Rabbi Zairah was the teacher of Rabbi Abba bar Zimina, and Eliezer is a typographical error, and all the earlier ones did not have the heart to correct it.]

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.27:1

It is written [in the genealogies in the Jerusalem Talmud, Perek 3 of Sanhedrin, Halacha 6, Rabbi Abba ben Zuta was living among non-Jews, and he was in Rome. They said to him, "Eat a carcass, or else I will kill you." He replied, "If you want to kill me, I will not eat." The non-Jew said to him, "Who told you that eating is a reason for me to kill you, a Jew or an Aramean?" (And this is also found in Perek 4 of Shevi'it, Halacha 2.

And it concludes there that if Rabbi Abba ben Zuta had heard from the Rabbis who say that for all transgressions one should transgress and not be killed, if it is between him and himself, except for idolatry, forbidden sexual relations, and murder, he would have eaten). And the Rosh wrote in Perek Ein Ma'amidin that it was certainly in private at home, but he wanted to be stringent upon himself, so said he. (And according to this, what is stated in the Jerusalem Talmud that if he had heard from the Rabbis he would have eaten, it is difficult to know from where it is known that he did not hear; perhaps he did hear but was stringent upon himself, and it is clear).

In the name of Rabbi Abdimy of Chifa, and Rabbi Dostai (see Chizkiyah). In the name of Rabbi Yitzchak (Jerusalem Talmud, Beitzah Perek 2, Shevi'it Perek 9). Rabbi Yossi bar Zimina, perhaps he is his brother.
