Rab Avya the Elder and his son Rava [(concerning the error that he did not have a son named Rava)] did not come to the lectures of Rav Yosef in Pumbedita, and he sent to Rav Dimi bar Yosef, saying: "Go and inform him that Rab Avya did not come because he was weak." In the chapter of the Morning Prayer [this is not mentioned in the Jerusalem Talmud and is an error; it should be stated that Rab Avya was weak and did not come to the lectures of Rav Yosef. The next day, when he came, Abaye asked him to calm the mind of Rav Yosef, and he said to him: "Why did you not come?" He replied: "I was weak," in the chapter of the Morning Prayer (28b)].
Rab Avya encountered Rava, and his legs were weak, and he placed him on a bed and Rava was upset. He asked him questions and he answered him, and Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak said: "Blessed is HaShem who did not make me poor" [(Shabbat 46a). And Rab Avya married the sister of Rami bar Pappa [in Bava Batra (100b) it is stated that he made for her a standing and sitting position. Rabbi Yosef said he erred in two matters. And there it simply states Rab Avya without mentioning the Elder, and because the lineage is written as Rab Avya the Elder, I did not change the order and wrote what I found.
In the chapter of Even Though (Niddah 56b) the sister of Rami bar Chama was married to Rab Avya, and she brought her ketubah before Rav Yosef, and he said to him... Abaye said... Here too Rab Avya is mentioned simply. (And it is difficult, for in Bava Batra they said he married the sister of Rami bar Pappa, and in Ketubot they said he married the sister of Rami bar Chama.
