רב אדא בר מתנה

רב אדא בר מתנה

Entry 234 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rab Ada bar Matna [and on Shabbat (Kiddushin 97b) it should be noted that Ada bar Matna is referred to as Rab Ada. He asked Abaye there (Menachot 48a) and said to Abaye, "My master, Ketubot (Avodah Zarah 2b)"] and he said about Rava that he was sharp as a knife [(Chulin 77a)] in the chapter "Whoever's Dead" Rabina was the first of his friends in the time of Rava. [In my opinion, it is clear that after Rab Ada bar Matna sat before Rava and he sat for Rava, then he is a student of Rava, and Rabina the last one was also a student of Rava (see there, and in my introduction and principles) thus Rab Ada bar Matna was a friend of the last Rabina.

Therefore, Rab Ada bar Matna and Rabina both asked from Rava, and the earlier Rabina who responded to Rab Yosef on his words was the teacher of Rava (see there) and Rab Ada bar Matna spoke with Rab Yosef. And Rabina who responded to Rab Yosef is not a friend of Rab Ashi, thus Rab Ada bar Matna was a student of the earlier Rabina and a friend of the last Rabina, and it is clear. And the intention of the lineage is that there (23) they asked what is the law concerning a person entering the bathroom with tefillin to urinate, Rabina permitted, Rab Ada bar Matna prohibited, he was asked to consult Rava, he said it is forbidden, thus it is stated.

And after he saw that Rab Ada bar Matna and Rabina disagreed on this matter, he wrote that they were friends, but he forgot what is stated in Shevuot (18a) where Rava said to Rab Ahi bar Memel, "Follow what your teacher Rabina told you," and so it is in Zevachim (100b) as explained in Rashi, thus Rabina was indeed his teacher, he sat before Rava in Ketubot (28a, Perek 5a) and Gittin (28b), and he and Rabina asked from Rava in Megillah (28b, he challenged Rava, Shabbat (8a), Eruvin (8, section 2, 34b) Rava said on Shabbat (109b), Avodah Zarah (28, Ra'ah 1), and perhaps because of this he counted the remainder of Yosef among the students of Rab and saw that he was mistaken in being a student of Rava. Rabba said, "In the chapter of Eruvin." He said to Rab Yosef explicitly, "You told us," Rab Nachman and Rab Sheshet sat, and they sat beside them and said to him, "Rab Ahi bar Memel," Zevachim (5b)].

And he did not have compassion on his sons and went to learn Torah. [Eruvin (22a). There was a reincarnation of Othniel (see Chagigah 2a, Tikkun 116) and his wife Achsah, and for that correction there were poor people (Gittin 1, letter a)].
