ר' אבא בר אחא

ר' אבא בר אחא

Entry 20 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Abba bar Acha [(Rab Acha, his son, as mentioned)] said: Rabbi Ilai said in the name of Rabbi, explained Rashi, that he is not Rabbi Abba bar Acha, the father of Rabbi Chiya the Great. And in the third chapter of "They Ate" [(Mishnah Ta'anit 5:1)] Rabbi Ilai said: Rabbi Yaakov said: Rabbi Abba bar Acha said in the name of our teacher. [And this version that brings the lineage I have not found, but the version before us there is: Rabbi Ilai said: Rabbi Yaakov bar Acha. (And on page 22a) Rabbi Ilai said: Rabbi Acha bar Yaakov said in the name of our teacher, Rashi explained: Rabbi. (And on page 25b) Rabbi Acha bar Abba bar Acha said in the name of our teacher.] Also in this I was in doubt whether he is not simply Rabbi Abba. [In the first chapter of Shekalim, Rabbi Bibi bar Abba, but in the Jerusalem Talmud, Rabbi Ba bar Abba]: Rabbi Abba of Acco [(see above Rabbi Abba)].

In the chapter "Where They Customarily Behave" [(I did not know why he brought the chapter "Where They Customarily Behave")] that he would kiss the head of Acco [(Ketubot 112a)]. And in the second chapter of Ketubot [(22a)] Rabbi Zeira said: This matter I heard from Rabbi Abba, if not for Rabbi Eliezer of Acco, I would have forgotten it.

And he was very humble [(more than his father, as mentioned)] and they would appoint his father to be the head of the Yeshiva, but he did not want because Rabbi Eliezer of Acco had many debts to him, and they would make him the head of the Yeshiva in order to enrich him so that they would give him gifts. [(Thus was their custom to enrich the head of the Yeshiva)] Sotah [(Mishnah 40a)].
