ר' אבא

ר' אבא

Entry 16 • Seder Tannaim v'Amoraim

Rabbi Abba: a) The aforementioned is uncertain to me whether he is Rabbi Abba bar Mamlel [(see there)] or Adir [(see above regarding Rabbi Abba bar Acha, and Abba Abba of Rabbi Ami)]. The miracle of Rabbi Abba before Rabbi Ami appears according to the version of the Gemaras to be Rabbi Abba bar Mamlel, in the chapter of the oaths of testimony [(Luz 2, 47a) and I do not know from where it is known that he is bar Mamlel, for Rabbi Abba is mentioned generally and he is uncertain who this general Rabbi Abba is.

It is written in the book Be'er Sheva, chapter one of Horayot, Rabbi Abba said, "We too..." It would seem to me that we do not read Rabbi Abba, for this general Rabbi Abba is a student of Rav Huna and Rav Yehuda, and Abaye is a student of Rav Yosef and Rabba, and Rabbi Abba is greater than Rav Yosef as is proven in the first chapter of Avodah Zarah (6b) and Bava Kamma (112a), where Rav Yosef sat behind Rabbi Abba and Rabbi Abba sat before Rav Huna, and it is also proven in Gittin, chapter of the sender. And if so, how did Rav Ashi establish the words of Abaye before Rabbi Abba?

And in Chullin (97b), Rabbi Abba said to Abaye, which indicates that there were two general Rabbi Abba, for he would ask Rabbi Abba his uncertainties from Abaye, indicating that he was younger than him (see in the rules, a contradiction to this proof). And we find another general Rabbi Abba who was a long time after Abaye in Shabbat, chapter of the one who asks (110b), Rabbi Abba said to Rav Ashi, and likewise in Bava Batra (147a, 148a) and Taanit (4) and Yoma (48a) and Gittin (34b), and so too in the Asheri, chapter one of Taanit, and in the Rif, the version is, Rabbi Ada said to Rav Ashi, Menachot (37a), Bekhorot (55a), Niddah (62b, 65b), Bava Kamma (27b), and since Rav Ashi did not see Rabba who was born when Rabba died, certainly he did not see Abaye who died before Rabba.

Therefore, we can say that also this Rabbi Abba here did not see Abaye at all, and thus we correctly read here Rabbi Abba.

Thus far the text. And the lineage was written, and Tosafot at the beginning of Me'ilah, Rabbi Asi said regarding Rabbi Abba, we read, for Rav Asi did not see Rabba (and I did not find).

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.16:1

b) And it appears that he is from Babylonia. [As it is stated, Rabbi Yehuda had a desire to ascend to the Land of Israel, Berakhot (24b)], for when he ascended, he found Rabbi Avin, and some say Rabbi Yochanan, and Rabbi Chanina bar Papi, and Rabbi Zeira, and others say Rabbi Abahu, and Rabbi Shimon ben Pazi, and Rabbi Yitzchak Nappachah. [They sat and discussed, etc. Rabbi Abba said to them, "Your brothers are upon you." Rabbi Oshaya said, "It is well that your brothers are upon you." Rabbi Safra said to Rabbi Oshaya, "Moses, you have spoken well" (in wonder, "Why do you treat them with mockery?") and they did not hear what Rabbi Chiya said, 'Katusfa in the name of Rav, etc.' Abaye said to Rabbi Safra, etc. (Beitzah 38a), for when Rabbi Abba ascended, he said, "May it be pleasing that a matter should be accepted."] In Avodah Zarah [(34b)], the boat of the Moris that came to dock in Akko, Rabbi Abba of Akko sat and said to Rabbi Abba, "Until now, who has been guarding?" And in P'nei Moshe [(43b)], Rabbi Abba in Babylonia at the time of Rava, who punished Rava with the value of an ox that was torn apart [(see there)], and it appears that he returned to Babylonia like Rabbi Zeira [(see above, regarding Katina)], in Kiddushin, P'erek HaOmer [(59a)], Rabbi Gidal was seeking to purchase land, and Rabbi Abba went and bought it, and Rabbi Gidal received it before Rabbi Zeira, and Rabbi Zeira to Rabbi Yitzchak Nappachah, for when he ascended for the festival and said to Rabbi Abba, "A poor man who turns over a stone and another comes and takes it, is called wicked." He said to him, "Master, why do you act this way?

You do not know whether he descended or did not descend, and it is called the land of the Rabbis."

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.16:2

g) And it appears that he lived many years because he was also in the time of the Rabbi [(to the Master)]. In the first chapter of the stolen item [(Kiddushin 104b)], he sent to Rabbi Safra to collect money from Rabbi Yosef bar Chama, the father of Rava, and at that time Rabbi Abba was old, and Rava advised Rabbi Yosef, his father, how to give the money. And it seems that he was wealthy because every Friday evening he would sell for thirteen isters of simple goods from thirteen butchers, and he said, "Assuredly it will be" [(Shabbat 119a)], and Rashi provides two explanations. [The chicken of Rabbi Abba, which he would cook and leave it in hot water for many days to become tender by itself and eat it for healing (Shabbat 145b)].

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.16:3

d) In Bava Metzia, in the chapter "Elu Metziot" [(24a)], in the Tosefta of Rabbi Abba, a student of Rabbi Ami, as is evident from the statement of Rabbi Abba mentioned above, that Rabbi Abba sat before Rabbi Ami, and how he sent to inquire of Rabbi Ami from Rabbi Abba, rather we have the version that he sent to Rabbi Asi [thus far (see Rabbi Ami and in the Tosefta in the chapter "HaNishba" (34a) and so too the Tosefta in the chapter "Kol HaNishba" (47a)]. Rabbi Ami said: Our teachers in the Land of Israel are Rabbi Abba. [(The genealogical record is as stated in the second chapter of Sanhedrin, it is a typographical error because it is in the first chapter, Mishnah 17), and it is difficult how Rabbi Abba sat before him, and perhaps we find in Shabbat (136b) that it refers to Rav for Rav Kahana and Rav Asi as our teachers, although they were his students, but it is difficult as Rabbi Ami came before Rabbi Abba and asked from him, and so some have the version in "Elu Metziot" that Rabbi Ami came before Rabbi Abba].

And the genealogical record states, and it seems to me the opposite [(from the Tosefta)] because Rabbi Ami said about Rabbi Abba: Our teachers in the Land of Israel, and because Rabbi Ami was then the head of the Yeshiva in the Land of Israel in place of Rabbi Yochanan, his teacher, it was said that Rabbi Abba sat before Rabbi Ami. In the chapter "Kol HaNishba" and in the chapter "HaMafkid" [(36a)] Rabbi Ami sat and said: A matter was established by Rabbi Abba bar Mamal for Rabbi Ami [(this is questionable because this pertains to Rabbi Abba bar Mamal)], and for this reason sometimes it is said in the name of Rabbi Ami at the end of the chapter "Kol HaKelim" [(125b)]: Rabbi Abba said in the name of Rabbi Ami, in the name of Rabbi Yochanan, even though he was not his teacher, because it was stated in the name of Rabbi Yochanan, and at the end of the chapter "HaNishba" Rabbi Ami sent to Rabbi Abba bar Mamal, and Rabbi Abba bar Zavda, who is a student of Rav Huna, asked from Rabbi Abba, but Rav Huna was greater than him.

And in the end of the chapter [(57a)] when Rabbi Abba ascended, he found Rabbi Zeira and said to him: From the day that you ascended here [(as stated in the beginning of the chapter, Rashi)] we have had an opening before Rav Huna, etc., and I found Rabbi Yirmiyah bar Abba who learned with the companions of Rabbi Abba, and Rabbi Zeira from him [(in the end of the chapter, 50a), many questions he sent to Rav Yosef bar Chama (see there, 128a). That man who showed the mat of Rabbi Abba sat Rabbi Abahu and Rabbi Chanina bar Papi and Rabbi Yitzchak Nafcha and Rabbi Ila, etc., he said to him: Go to Rabbi Shimon ben Eliezer (and in the genealogical record, it is written Rabbi Yochanan ben Eliezer (see there) it is an error) and to Rabbi Elazar ben Peda, he went to them (Baba Kamma 117b)].

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.16:4

He wrote the genealogy in the name of the Ra'avad in the chapter of the chalitzah, in his rulings that the halachah follows Rabbi Abba because he is a judge of Eretz Yisrael, as it is stated in Shevuot, and he descends to the depths of the law.

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.16:5

5) [On Shabbat (34a) the sign is: in the body, song, morning, in the rope, of the matter. Its explanation is that this is where Abba said that Chiya bar Ashi said that Rav said. In the body, it is a name; in the body it is difficult (and the version before us states Rava, which is a mistake and should be R' Abba). Song, on Shabbat (67b) (and the version before us states R' Acha, which is a mistake and should be R' Abba) as R' Chiya bar Abba said R' Ami (it should say Rav and in the Shas it was not corrected) song for what reason is he obligated.

Morning, on Shabbat (107a) a bird entered for him. In the rope, there (113a) a person brings a rope; R' Abba said that Chiya bar Ashi said that R' Yochanan (this is a mistake and should say Rav, and so it is in the Ashrei). Of the matter, there (124b) (Shulchan Aruch, Torah Shebe'al Peh, letter Samech and Chiddushei Halachos and Shulchan Aruch). And I found another section in the chapter "What is Covered" (59b) a box turned on its side and takes; R' Abba said that Chiya bar Ashi said that Rav said if the guma became spoiled, it is forbidden to return it.

And were it not for the fact that I am afraid, I would correct the sign in the body, box, song, etc., and it was omitted in the printing which is the same in pronunciation, also in Niddah (16b) R' Abba as R' Chiya bar Abba said Rav.

However, regarding this, one can say that the intention of the sign is what R' Abba as R' Chiya bar Abba said Rav in the tractate Shabbat, but what was forgotten from him in the chapter of "What is Covered" is puzzling. R' Chiya bar Ashi (Jerusalem Talmud, Shabbat 3:4, and in the chapter "From the Pockets," and in Ketubot 2 and Gittin 3:4)].

Seder_HaDorot,_Tanaim_and_Amoraim.16:6

7) [Rabbi Abba bar Zavda asked Rabbi Abba bar Yirmiya. And Rabbi Asi was present at the house of... (see there), and Rabbi Abba of Chifa. He learned from Rabbi Abba bar Chiyya bar Abba, in the name of Abba bar Rav Huna. He posed a question to Rabbi Abahu and Rabbi Asi.

Abudimi bar Hamduri. Abaye was before him, and he asked Abaye (see above). The reward of a father-in-law (and it requires investigation). Rabbi Oshaya said in Ketubot (79a).

He said before Rabbi Hoshaya. In the name of Achah, Rabbi Achah bar Pazi challenged him, and Rabbi Ila, and Rabbi Ilai before Rabbi Elazar in Chulin (19b) and Rabbi Eliezer ben P'dat, Rabbi Ami (see above), posed a question to Rabbi Asi. Rabbi Asi said in Bava Batra (100b). He said to Rav Ashi (see above).

He said to him. Rabbi Berachia in his name, Rav Gidal (see above), Rav Huna was his teacher (see above and there). And Rabbi Hoshaya answered Rabbi Abba (see there), and he eulogized Rabbi Hoshaya. And Rav Huna bar Chiyya, Rav Huna bar Ika, said to Rabbi Zeira (see above), and the lineage was written by Rabbi Zeira, his colleague (see above).

In the name of Ze'ira (Yerushalmi Gittin, chapter 1). And Rabbi Zerikan was favorable. Zerika said Rabbi Abba said Rabbi Chiyya bar Abba, and he is in his name, Rabbi Chiyya bar Ashi (see above). In the name of R' Chiya ben Gamliel, and Rabbi Chanina bar Pappi (see above).

Rabbi Chanina said in Menachot (chapter 8, 2), Rav Yehuda was his teacher (see above) and he said to Rabbi Yochanan in the house of the festival of the house of Bar Zakai (Eruvin 49a). Rabbi Yochanan said in Chulin (93). Many teachings he asked Rabbi Yehuda in Berachot (11b). And Rabbi Yehuda in his name, Rav Yehuda bar Shmuel said Rabbi Eliezer, and Rav Yehuda bar Shalom, Rabbi Yehuda bar Zavdi said, and Rabbi Yehoshua bar Nechemiah.

Rabbi Yochanan said (Eruvin 46b). He found Rabbi Yochanan in Beitzah (38a). And Rabbi Yossi bar Abba asked Rabbi Matna. He learned with Rabbi Yossi ben Pazi.

He was accepted by Yosa Risha, Rabbi Yosani in his time. He sent to Rabbi Yosef bar Chama, and Rabbi Yosef sat behind (see above), Rabbi Yaakov of the village of Chanan in his name, and Rabbi Yitzchak Nafcha (see above) said to Rabbi Yitzchak bar Bisna, Rabbi Yitzchak bar Shmuel bar Marta, and he asked Rabbi Yochanan ben Shimon, he said to Rabbi Yirmiya bar Abba, he said Rabbi Yirmiya bar Abba (Megillah 18b).

And Rabbi Yirmiya in the name of Rav (Shekalim, chapter 4), Rabbi Yirmiya asked him for forgiveness for having insulted him on Yoma (chapter 7, 1). Rabbi Yirmiya said to him, "Master, on Shabbat" (Kedushin 126a), Rabbi Yirmiya asked him. Rabbi Yishmael bar Rabbi Yossi in the name of Rabbi Abai (see there and it requires investigation). Rabbi Kahana said (there 125, 2).

He sat behind Rav Kahana (see there). And Rabbi Levi bar Chiyta. In the name of M'yasha. He sent to Mari bar Mar.

He asked from Rav Huna, he asked from Rabbi Matna, he asked from Rav Nachman in Perek Chalon (Eruvin 76b). He asked Sanchus (Ketubot, chapter 1, 1) and it is puzzling, for Sanchus was a student of Rabbi Meir and there was a long time between them, and I labored and found a pearl that Rabbi Abba who asked Sanchus is Rabbi Abba Aricha, he is a Rav (see there). And Rabbi Siman in the name of Rabbi Yochanan (Shekalim, chapter 1), Rav Safra in his name, and R'S sent to him, he challenged Ula (Baba Metzia 11a) and said to him (Gittin 50b, 79a) and he went to his right and Ula rode (see there), and he said to him, "Ula, is this one from the Rabbis, as people do not complete the teaching" (Gittin 39a), Rav Pappa bar Abba Rishba came before him.

Rav Pappa, and Rav B'H in Pesachim (53b). In the name of Rav (Yerushalmi Sukkah, chapter 1, Yevamot, chapter 12) Rav Shmuel bar Yiv'a said, he said to Rabbi Shmuel bar Yitzchak, Rabbi Shmuel bar Yehuda said in the name of Rabbi Eliezer, he asked from him Rabbi Shimon ben Gamliel from the granary (Baba Kamma 7b), Rabbi Shmuel said in Berachot (50a), in Megillah (5a), in Eruvin (13b), in Sukkah (13b), and Rabbi Shimon ben Eliezer (see above).

He said to him on Shabbat (63, 1) many things. Rabbi Shimon bar Pazi (see above). He said to Rav Shmaya, Rabbi Tadai said:]
