Rab Heunah, the father of Zeira the Kohen, was sitting with Abba bar Banchai and they were eating, and Rabbi Zeira was standing and serving before them. Abba bar Banchai said to him, "What is your hand doing, cutting [the food]?" and Rab Heunah became angry and said to him, "Is it not enough that you are sitting while he is standing?
Moreover, he is a Kohen and it is forbidden for a Kohen to serve." The explanation of Yefeh Ma'aseh there is that Rab Heunah, the father of Zeira, was upset with Rabbi Abba bar Banchai for humiliating Zeira, who was a Jerusalemite Kohen (Berakhot 8:5).
Therefore, this Rab Heunah is not just any Rab Heunah, as he was not a Kohen, as it is stated in Gittin (59b) that Rab Heunah was called a Kohen (and Rashi explained that he was an Israelite) because Rabbi Ami and Rabbi Asi, who were esteemed Kohanim, were in the Land of Israel and they would compel him (see above regarding Rab Heunah). And there, in Yefeh Ma'aseh in the gloss from the G'mar Michal, may his memory be blessed, there is a dispute in Tosafot whether a Kohen can forgo his honor, and from the incident of Rabbi Zeira (who was serving before them) it seems that he could forgo it, for his father, Rab Zeira, was not particular about being disrespected in serving against his will, but he was particular about what was said about his son, "What is your hand doing, cutting?" And he said to him (that a Kohen can never forgo his honor) that here (it is different) because of the honor of Rab Heunah, who is called a Kohen because he was a great man of the generation; therefore, they allowed him to serve (this is not the case) because there the reason is such, etc.
Therefore, according to his explanation, Zeira, who was a Kohen, was the son of Abba bar Banchai, and this Rab Heunah is simply an Israelite and is called a Kohen.
However, it is difficult to understand, for we do not find that Abba bar Banchai was a Kohen; ultimately, there is no conclusion whether Zeira the Kohen was the son of Rab Heunah according to the explanation of Yefeh Ma'aseh or the son of Abba bar Banchai. Indeed, I labored and found in the Yalkut at the end of Nehemiah, and it states: "Abba and Rab Heunah were sitting, and Zeira was serving and was carrying wine and oil in one hand.
Rab Heunah said to him, 'What is your hand doing, cutting?' and Abba became angry with him and said, 'It does not fit,' etc., and moreover, he is a Kohen." Thus, it is evident that Zeira was the son of Abba, and this Rab Heunah was not a Kohen, and it does not read "Bar Bar Chana," and perhaps Rabbi Abba is the son of Rabbi Chiya bar Abba, who was a Kohen.
Thus, the version of the Yalkut is the opposite of the version of the Jerusalem Talmud.
