Year 5350: There was a year of drought in the province of Bohemia. A certain man in a village near the city of Kuirshon, five parasangs from Prague, was poor and begged for bread, and his children cried for bread. The man wept at night and cried out to HaShem. In the morning he went out in anguish to dig for clay material.
When he dug, he found in the ground dust and powder and did not know what it was. He brought it to his house and made from it a cooked dish of oat porridge and baked bread from it, and they ate and were satisfied. The matter became known and thousands went there and took from the dust, food for their homes. I too have seen this dust with my own eyes and took some of it for safekeeping (Tzemach David, part 2).
That year was very hot and no rain fell all summer, not even the moisture of dew was felt. All the rivers dried up and water was sold at a high price. All the produce dried up and the trees did not give their fruit. There was a great inflation in the prices of bread, wine, beer, meat, and butter.
From this came robbery and violence (ibid.).
