In the year 5176 the kingdom of Don Porto took all the children and baptized them in water [(Shomer HaDat, section 114, section 2).] And in the responsa Terumat HaDeshen, section 342, it says in the year 5176 the Jews of Ashkenaz paid a fifth of their wealth as ransom to remove the decrees. And in that generation King David of Persia asked the Jews why they do not work the land like the other nations.

And in the end he decreed that they should settle in villages. And one of his advisors said he acted foolishly, because the Jews will multiply greatly and become rich, and it is better that you bring them to the city. And he sent a proclamation that they may marry and eat with each other now. And I know for certain that in a short time they will convert and we will be one faith.

And so he did. And because of our sins, as he thought so it was and Israel was diminished greatly, [(Shomer HaDat there, paragraph 72).] In those days Pope Eugene decreed upon all Israel together with 42 conditions against the Jews, and among them he gathered all their wealth: that no Jew should study their Torah except the Torah of Moshe. And when they saw that the majority of the public could not withstand these decrees, they made a general assembly from all the Jews in Italy in the city of Tivoli, and afterward in the city of Ravinia, and they endeavored on the matter, and with great expenses they were annulled [(there letter 115, section 2)]:
