Rav Shmuel Gaon from among the sons [(of Ameimar, the colleague of Rav Ashi, in Yuchsin in the order of tradition from the Rama"n. And from his yeshiva of Pumbedita was Rash"b who is in the letter of Rash"b)] of Mareimar, and he was the son of the son of Rabba Gaon mentioned above [(in Pumbedita and at that time there was Rav Huna in Mata Mechasia and he was a great sage, Rash"b)]. He became head of the yeshiva in Sura for 17 years from year 4496 until year 4507 [(Tzemach David), and in Shada"k page 36b it says he died in year 4510].
