**Know** [that in the generations of the Tanna'im and the order of their reception from Hillel the Elder until Rabbeinu HaKadosh there is a difference]:
Year 3833 of the Jewish calendar.
**According to the Rambam:**
[Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai, Rabban Gamliel, Rabbi Tarfon, Rabbi Akiva, Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Yehudah. Rabbeinu HaKadosh, (see Rabban Gamliel and you will see that this is an error)].
**According to the Ra'avad:**
[Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai, Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh, Rabbi Akiva, Rabban Shimon father of Rebbi, and Rebbi].
**According to the Sefer Keritot:**
[Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai, Rabban Shimon ben Hillel. Rabbi Eliezer the Great. Rabban Gamliel the Elder. Rabbi Akiva. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel who was killed, Rabbi Meir, Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh. Rebbi].
**According to the Ba'al Halichot Olam:**
[Rabban Gamliel the Elder. Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel. Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai (see year 3768), Rabbi Eliezer the Great. Rabbi Tarfon. Rabbi Akiva. Rabbi Meir. Rebbi].
**According to the Ba'al HaYuchsin:**
[Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai. Rabbi Eliezer the Great. Rabbi Akiva, Rabban Shimon, Rabbi Meir, Rabbeinu HaKadosh].
**According to Abarbanel:**
[Rabban Shimon ben Hillel. Rabban Gamliel the Elder. Rabban Shimon who was killed. Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai (see year 3768).
Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh. Rabban Shimon father of Rebbi, Rabbeinu HaKadosh. And even though each one changed the order, know that there is no disagreement between them at all, for each one called a different one of the great men of the generation (and see each one and what it says, and you will see which way the light should dwell properly). And I have written from here and onward the order of the Rambam in his introduction to Zera'im from the time of the destruction until the sealing of the Mishnah (Tzeda), and when you examine the place of each one you will see in some of them that it is not so].
**Group and first generation after the destruction:**
**Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai** became Nasi after Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel was killed, and went up from Yerushalayim to Yavneh. He passed away in year 3833, 5 years after the destruction [(Tzeda). And see year 3812 and 3768, and see entry for Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai].
**Rabban** Gamliel the Second, called Rabban Gamliel of Yavneh, son of Rabban Shimon who was killed, grandson of Rabban Gamliel the Elder, and great-grandfather of Rabbeinu HaKadosh. He was the opponent of Rabbi Yehoshua. He became Nasi in year 3833 and received from his father [(Tzeda)], the 32nd receiver [(according to Yuchsin in Seder HaDorot near Shmuel HaKatan). And Sha'ar HaDorot sections 27 and 58 says he received from Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai around year 3840, about 12 years after the destruction, and this requires investigation.
And in Sefer Keritot it says he was a colleague of Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrkanos and Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananyah. And see there that Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai was Nasi only 2 or 3 years after the destruction, therefore this Rabban Gamliel became Nasi in year 3830 or 3831].
**Rabbi Eliezer** the Great son of Hyrkanos, he is the unspecified "Rabbi Eliezer" [(in the Mishnah)] and in the Talmud, a student of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai. He received 38 traditions according to Abarbanel [(Tzeda)].
**Rabbi Yehoshua** ben Chananyah the Levi, he is the unspecified "Rabbi Yehoshua" in the Mishnah [(and in the Talmud)], a student of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai. [According to the Rambam he was the 31st receiver (Yuchsin there)]. In his days, Julianus Caesar, the 46th of Rome, wanted to build the Temple [(Tzeda and Sha'ar HaDorot)].
**Rabbi Yosi** the Kohen and Rabbi Shimon ben Netanel and Rabbi El'azar ben Arach were students of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai [(Tzeda)].
**Rabbi El'azar** ben Azaryah the Kohen was appointed as head in place of Rabban Gamliel [(see there)]. Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov the second was in this generation. Rabbi Eliezer HaKalir of the Tanna'im, some say he was in this generation [(Tzeda). It is written in Sefer Yetzirah: "Honor to God, Rabbi Eliezer HaKalir established it"].
**Rabbi Yehudah** ben Beteira, colleague of Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai, lived a very long life [(see there)].
**Rabbi Yehudah** ben Abba and Rabbi Yehudah the Kohen from the first generation after the destruction [(Yuchsin in Seder HaDorot, end of the first group after the destruction)].
