It is written [in Seder Hadoros 15, 2]: Josephus, section 67, chapter 12, says that Shlomo placed in the grave of David his father a large sum of silver and gold. And after 1,300 years, Hyrcanus took out 3,000 talents of silver for Antiochus, and likewise afterward Herod did. And no one entered the grave. After days, Herod wanted to enter - he secretly sent at night two youths, and they died at the entrance of the grave.
Fire came out and burned the youths, and he fled. And afterward he built a beautiful building over the grave. And with all this, from then on all his deeds turned out badly. [It is written in Sefer Mas'ot Binyamin:] This was 15 years after the wall of their house of prayer fell, which stood on Mount Zion, and the priest, the Patriarch, commanded to take stones from the buildings that stood there from before to repair the house of prayer.
And they dug and found a large stone, and they brought it and saw a door to a cave, and they opened it and saw a building on pillars of marble covered with gold and silver, and a table with a golden crown upon it and two closed chests. And when they wanted to enter, a storm wind came out of the cave upon them, and they fell to the ground and did not stand until evening time. And afterward a voice came out as if speaking with a human voice: "Stand and go from here." And it appeared to them as if they were being pushed from there, and they fell for several days sick from the great fear.
And they told the priest, and he immediately commanded to repair it as it was. And there is the burial of David, and to the left is the grave of Shlomo and the rest of the kings of Yehuda [(see there)].
