And Samlah from Masrekah from the land of the children of Kedem reigned in his place, twelve years into the reign of Malul and one hundred and fifteen years after the descent of the children of Israel to Egypt [this is year 2353]. And he reigned eighteen years over Edom. And it came to pass when he reigned that he gathered his army to fight against Tzepho son of Elifaz and the children of Kittim. But the children of Esav prevented him, saying that he is their brother and he did not go.
And Pharaoh heard that Samlah planned to fight against the children of Kittim and afterwards would come to fight against Egypt. And he intensified the labor upon the children of Israel and said, "Hurry and work and finish your tasks and fortify the land, lest the children of Esav, your brothers, come against us to war. But when they afflict them so, they will multiply" [Sefer HaYashar]. For two years and a third of a year until Moshe was born, the decree was "every son that is born" [Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer chapter 48].
