Ten years after Abraham's dwelling in the land of Canaan [(that was the year 2013)], 64 years of Abraham's life, there was war between Nimrod king of Shinar and Chedorlaomer, for Chedorlaomer was the commander of Nimrod's armies. When all the people of the Tower fell and were scattered, Chedorlaomer went to the land of Elam and reigned over it and rebelled against his master. When Nimrod heard that all the cities of the plain had rebelled against Chedorlaomer, he came to fight with Chedorlaomer with pride and plunder to subdue him under him.

Nimrod gathered about 7,000 men and Chedorlaomer went out with 5,000 men, and they arrayed for battle in the valley of Babel between Elam and Shinar. Nimrod was defeated before Chedorlaomer and 400 of Nimrod's men fell, including Mardon his son, and Nimrod fled and returned to his land in shame and disgrace and submitted before Chedorlaomer for many days. Chedorlaomer returned to his land and sent to the kings around him - to Arioch king of Ellasar and Tidal king of Goyim - and they made a covenant with him and all of them obeyed him.
